Hey guys,

Update 3

Thanks for all the prayers. He still has a torn aorta, so they're keeping his blood pressure down. I spent a good portion of the day with him and his family. He's not awake yet. Lacerations to the liver, kidneys and scalp, six broken ribs, a broken C2 vertebra. He's going to be in the ICU for a good long while.

His fiancee made it to Seattle today. (She was in the car with him but suffered only minor injuries.) It's a bit stressful there because she's 19, doesn't have a whole lot of self-awareness or emotional control in this situation. She isn't especially good at including his family (their second time meeting her) and didn't realize, when his blood pressure jumped as she talked to him, that the best course would have been to leave the room or be quiet rather than put him at risk. It's going to be a long couple of days til he wakes up.

Wow... some serious injuries. I have prayed and will try to remember to do so again for a while.

The vascular team hopefully will be able to give us more info on repairing the aorta today. Hopefully...

Thanks for the updates. It's certainly serious but it's good to read that he's going to make it. It's very kind of you to help support the fiancee and his family at this time.

We're hoping he'll make it. The damage to the aorta is still a very risky thing, especially when they go in to fix it. Nothing is certain quite yet.

Good luck to him, and  to the (off-duty) trauma docs and paramedics that probably saved him.

Indeed.

No change in condition really at this point. They drained a bunch of fluid from around his lungs so he's breathing a bit better.

Update from last evening (02/27, ~7:00 PM) when I went with HC to visit him: He's responding more to people being in the room, but no change in physical condition. Doctors are waiting to repair the aorta until he's healed a little more, but they seem to have a more solid plan of action than has been described to me before.

Update 5: Matt had a collapsed lung last night, so they wound up putting chest tubes in to suction out more of the gunk. He's more stable again now, on lower oxygen today, but it was a pretty rough night.

I'm sure his awareness that you're there, that you care, is helping him a LOT and strengthening him.

Did the crash involve other vehicles & victims?
If so he'll eventually need a lot of emotional support dealing with that.
He's a very fortunate guy to have supportive caring friends like you.

No cord damage apparent. He's moving his limbs.
