And they want to keep it that way. Luckily, democrats are on a roll to improve education in America, despite republican objections.

***Congress Gives College Aid A Boost***
WASHINGTON -- More needy college students will have access to bigger Pell Grants, and future borrowers of government loans will have an easier time repaying them, under a vast overhaul of higher education aid that Congress passed Thursday and sent to President Barack Obama.

The legislation, an Obama domestic priority overshadowed by his health care victory, represents the most sweeping rewrite of college assistance programs in four decades. It strips banks of their role as middlemen in federal student loans and puts the government in charge.

The House passed the measure 220-207 as part of an expedited bill that also fixed provisions in the new health care law. Earlier Thursday, the Senate passed the bill 56-43.

The switch to direct government loans will result in savings to boost Pell Grants and make it easier for some workers to repay their student loans. In addition, some borrowers could see lower interest rates and higher approval rates on student loans.

I'm convinced at this point that liberals simply do not believe that supply and demand are causally linked. A huge FU to all of the politicians giving my tax dollars to everyone else so they can go to school while I am giving a huge chunk of my income to pay back my private loans since I wasn't cool enough to get any from the government myself.

Education is so horribly inferior in America it's a travesty conservatives pretty much run it - oh wait...

I'm glad they are removing the middle man. It's absurd to pay banks to administer loans and make profits while government assumes 100% of the risks.

Edit: I'm amazed that bank lobbyists actually let Congress get away with this.

Holy hot damn...that is..wow.

Capping student loan payments at 10% of income (on top of the existing forgiveness structure)

Pell grants rising to nearly $6,000. Restrictions eased.

Not huge, decent sized, but just a fast package surprise.

Meanwhile, my property taxes are paying for YOUR kids' educations. A vast FU, I'm sure you'll agree.

Stop leeching off of me!

So all those people who use to sell these loans for banks are out of a job now since the gov took it over. Good job creator there.

And wow they really are giving students a helping hand, "Among its many provisions, it increases the maximum Pell Grant from $5,350 in 2009 to $5,550 in 2010 and $6,900 in 2019 and keeps interest rates low on subsidized federal student loans."

Man $200 is going to buy a lot of books!

I don't have kids, and when I do, I will pay for them to go to good (read: private) schools. :cookie:

In this country? In the last few days, I've been made to understand that the US is going to collapse and fall under communism...

\you best move now, to save the minds of your future children...
\\hurry before its too late!

YA RIGHT educating that kid so he can grow up to be the surgeon doing your by-pass is the shits.

Increasing acecss to post secondary education does not improve education. Improving education would require restricting access, or at least making it merit based. Too many people waste too much of their lives going to college.

To bad this covers the universities in America, which are the best in the world.
And steadily declining. The American university system rose to prominence back when only a minority of students went. It is now being taken over by the NEA entitlement culture.

Won't that mean that it will take even longer to pay off the loans...? The 10% cap, I mean.

It means teh ABD poli-sci students who end up making a career out of door knocking for ACORN, PETA, and Greenpeace and getting arrested at WTO meetings won't ever pay their loans off, but now they won't have to care!

OP's grammar proves that he's a part of the group he claims republicans love 😀

More liberal stupidity of course. Yay, more money thrown at the 'problem', results don't matter.

But seriously folks, education started getting expensive when everyone started thinking that they needed to go to college to get a good job. I'll caveat that later. But it's just like the "affordable housing" lie, you can't increase demand and expect prices to be affordable - or even worse, try to force them to be affordable by making it easier to get money, which increases demand, which increases prices... This is basic economics, folks.

Of course the true lie is that you "need" a BS degree to do any job these days. While it is true that for mid level white collar jobs, you likely need a degree to actually get the job. But for most jobs you don't actually need the degree to do the job. I'd much prefer that this country followed an apprenticeship type career path, with more respect for skilled tradesmen and an appreciation for people making their way up through the ranks. Because of this BS degree BS, you won't even find many mid level managers these days who started on the shop floor.

So just because you got screwed means everyone else from now until the end of time should get screwed as well? No.

Man the fuck up, pay your bills, and stop your bitching.

But will soon be so expensive that only the exceedingly wealthy and those that the government deem "poor" will be able to attend them by getting a full, need-based ride.

I thought the solution to rising costs was "make more money". That's how it is with healthcare, is it not?
