I'm not gonna read all the bickering about what causes obesity, but here is my real life experience.

When I was a kid my family was below the average income level so I received reduced or free lunches. This helped my family a great deal as we couldn't afford even new school clothes.

Now on to the obesity, I was a healthy kid until I started eating what the school provided and my parents stopped packing me lunch. I went from healthy to an obese child in 2 yrs. I was active as schools required gym classes and I didn't get back to normal weight until college.

My family isn't in the same situation now, but having those lunches did help even though they made me fat. Looking back at it now as an adult, those school lunches was one less thing for me to worry about and one less thing for my parents as well.

There are people who take advantage if the system, but there are those who really need/benefit from the system too like my family.

If kids aren't getting the nutrition they should be, whether it's because their parents are bad cooks, or because they can't afford healthy food, or because the local school system doesn't serve healthy stuff to children who are its wards for 7 hours a day, the federal government should step in--- not only because kids are citizens too, but because it's in our national interest to have a healthy smart population.

BS get OUT of my face!

Look around you. Stop acting like kids are starving. We're not in Dickens' London. We're in 21st Century America where even poor people are overfeeding to the point of getting diabetes.

Poor people eat *cheap calories*. That's not a good thing. Not that you give a rat's ass.

"I'm 44 and I pack my dam lunch everyday and I eat heathy..... So what is your question? No refigerator just an ice pack... Hot luch have the parents put it in tupperware and have the kids heat it up! One cold meal a day will not kill them and for heathy meals may be the best!

Stop BSing us all that we HAVE to do it for the kids! "

I'll say again why should we all pay for this with OUR tax dollors! Darn it grow up!

This is a little different than a business environment. I usually bring healthy leftovers for my lunch also. But several hundred kids aren't going to line up at a microwave to heat up their veggie lasagna.

I agree that it's possible to eat a healthy cold lunch every day, but it's exceedingly difficult even for me to keep it healthy and still have a decent amount of variety.

We should take a hint from the private sector. Ships and oil rigs have cooks who make high quality food, because they get a return on the investment. When I worked on site at Anadarko Petrolum I bought lunch at the cafeteria every day because it was cheap and very high quality healthy stuff.

werepossum, we can't take away every kid who needs the after school meals... it's just not practical. Feeding them after school is cheap and easy and it benefits all of us.

Yes, I get it, you hate J'quon's fat mother. But in 10 years hopefully he'll be going to college or into the work force, and most likely the better we treated him at age 8, the better he'll be doing in 2020, and the better off the entire country will be
Why on Earth would he be going off the college or into the work force when his whole life he's been taught that things are simply given, not earned? When his whole life he's been taught that NOT going to college or to work has benefits, but no consequences? J'quon may be stupid, and he's almost certainly ignorant, but I doubt he's too dumb to see how this works. The life lessons he's been taught show him that a better life springs not from education and/or from hard work, but rather springs from producing as many little J'quon Juniors and J'quonnas as possible while spending as little as possible on the little rug rats.

lol, so now school lunches are healthy? Last I checked, they were about the most unhealthy meals you could get (and getting worse). Not only that, but kids will do things like waste the healthy foods and go back for more of the crap foods.

You want to look at some of the factors making children obese, look at school lunch programs.

Yet strangely enough, some of you here honestly believe that starving kids not eating unhealthy meals will somehow make them fat.

Parents are responsible to feed their children, If they can't afford it, they shouldn't be having children. It isn't the governments responsibility to provide for the morons of society.

Ships and rigs serve huge meals, many items aren't considered healthy. I've seen people gain 20lb or more from being on a rig for 30 days.

Unhealthy for us maybe, but most of those people burn those calories working. They cook real food though, vs schools reheating frozen junk food.

LOL @ cheap calories. I'd love to hear your explanation of how the human body processes *cheap* calories separate from *expensive* calories. Please be as detailed and scientific as possible.

Not only that, school lunches are what? $1.20? $2.50 on the expensive side? If you can come up with $10 to feed your kid lunch for a week than you need to get off the bottle/needle/crack pipe.

That may be true on the microwave but for a parent to keep it heathy for 5 days cold is do a bull....🙂

What happened to you to make you hate people so much?
??? I don't hate anyone, excepting serial killers and child molesters/child pornographers. But I do recognize that people, even welfare mothers and their children, are not stupid. We have set up a system that rewards sloth and indolence. Poor people on welfare see their effective income governed mostly by how many children they can have - so they have a lot of children. Poor people also see that their life does not materially change if they work harder and get a better job, because government steps in and rewards them with more perks and bennies for earning less (or nothing) while removing perks and bennies if they work less.

Your average poor inner city welfare kids see drug dealers with money, a few government officials that seem to be doing pretty good, and a bunch of people who have about the same standard of living whether they are shiftless welfare ranchers, maids or janitors, or work at other jobs. They see a few store owners and/or managers, who are also doing noticeably better. They also see the community's ire directed most not at the thieves and drug dealers and gangbangers, but at the store owners and those shadowy unseen folks who supposedly live middle class lives. They see that mothers who can't be bothered to feed their own children are treated the same as those who sacrifice for their children - except that the former mothers have more money to spend on themselves.

So what do these kids learn? What the system teaches:
Hard work is for chumps, it never really makes your life any better.
Education is for chumps, it never really makes your life any better.
Having a job really doesn't make much difference in your standard of living.
There's no need to teach or even feed your children; that's government's job.
Having a good job really doesn't make much difference in your standard of living, over a bad job or no job.
Have another child, get another check. Guaranteed.
Through some magical process, a very few people become wealthy. These are all sports figures, or entertainers. It's all luck, really. And that's the only way to measurably improve one's life.

These kids are not stupid. They see the system we've set up for what it is - a system where hard work and education are largely unrelated to rewards.

And that was part of their pay not a handout from us...... Feed your own kids darn it..... what dont you get about it?

Ok lets go right wing here......

Government tells us ALL what is good for us to eat and you have to buy it!

And this is different how?

And buy the way the "rich will pay for it"

It's not about starving, it's about nutrition. The diabetes you're talking about is because of poor nutrition, but even more important is the lower IQ that results from not feeding a growing brain properly.

You don't hear that publicly debated because it's politically incorrect to talk about IQ.

None of the needed nutrients for IQ are expensive. There's also the fact that school lunches have been around for ever and yet inner city youths still have tremendous obstacles. Most likely because culture and values plays a bigger part in economic success than a sandwhich at lunch.
