there is a big difference here debaters... the difference is those are all valid languages..
Ebonics is just made up BS that a small uneducated minority came up with and demanded it be called thier language..

I didn't read the whole thread, but I have to say this:

OP - in college, you're allowed to argue with the professor. ESPECIALLY in a "critical thinking" class. Tell your professor why you'r right, don't come here and complain about him.

I wasn't given the chance. I was labeled narrow minded and that was that.

1) A language is something that allows communications in a structured way. Ebonics fits that definition entirely. Thus, ebonics is a language. One could argue that it is an English dialect and not an entirely different language of course. But it is still a language.

2) Correlation is not causation. Just because you speak Ebonics does not mean you are uneducated. Yes, they are often linked, but you are incorrect if you state that they always go together.

3) I take your comments as being uneducated. It is also borderline racist.

Well said. The OP ignores the fact that ebonics is often spoken not out of ignorance but rather as an affront to cultural dominance.

this should be in P&N though.

CVSiN ebonics is on the same level as spanglish, pigeon, cockney and many others. In fact in England, Cockney(it constitutes the broadest form of London local accent) is stated to be the language of the uneducated and poor english. Looking back in history and the different dialects and languages is amazing to me. For instance, one of the most negative words that refer to African Americans comes from an uneducated european decent sailor who couldn't pronounce the country Niger correctly.

Ebonics is a trainwreck of lack of education and cultural laziness and irresponsibility. Calling it a language implies that Blacks have neither the intellect nor the discipline to learn proper English. Crys of racism are the only retort a liberal has when confronted with a truth that does not support their agenda. Your professor is and idiot but he does control your grades so learn not to have an opinion in his biased class. Learning to get through college with good grades when dealing with the liberal biased professors is as much a part of your education as is the actual material being taught in class.

Ok, I think you went a little over the line here. I agree with your first sentence, however my disagreement with your second sentence is two fold. First, you imply that Ebonics is by definition of lower intellectual merit than "proper English." I contend that while it is a bastardization of the language that I speak, the requirements of speaking it in no way differ from those of English. Second, you make the assumption that only Black people speak ebonics, which we know is not the case. You've singled out a group and extrapolated your views onto the whole. Additionally, while I agree with (what I believe to be) the underlying argument of your third sentence, I believe that it constitutes an ad hominem attack against those who disagree with you. Attacking the man rather than the issue causes this sentence to be disregarded from your argument. With the exception of one additional ad hominem attack, I have no problems with the rest of your post.

when people cry Racism it is their attempt to shut you up by calling you a vial name instead of talking about the subject. its no different than in the 1300 when people called each other heratics. i belive caprinicaus (sp) and Galleio are prime examples of this.

its a language that is based outa ignorance.. and no it came from a lifestyle.. the gangsta rapper wannabes that think its cool to distort the proper english language.
black people do not all speak it nor is it from a certain geographical area.. it came from a lifestyle and it is not recognized as a language by anyone.. it is looked down upon is almost all walks of life here in the US and those that speak it are considered stupid..

Naw, his logic folded when he decided to sling the 'racist' label.
By his misuse of my point #2, JRock basically stated that a big segment of the black population is uneducated. In a nutshell, that is his message. I consider that message borderline racist. It is not fully racist since he did not proclaim all of them to be uneducated. He could remove all racism from his comments by further clarifying, providing evidence, or by providing suggestions on how to assist the problem.

has nothign to do with being poor....
i know poor people that speak perfect english and their kids still go to school and get good grades...

it has to do with being lazy and uneducated and speaking it for the most part on purpose..

Oh, and I don't consider ebonics a language. Until you need to know ebonics to get a job, or it becomes specific to some geographic region it is NOT a language. It's slang pure and simple and it's use IS more common amongst the uneducated which says enough. Try answering a college exam in ebonics and see what you get. 😛

You are correct that Ebonics is a dialect like Cockney, and that both are considered representative of particular lower classes.
However, the negative word you refer to has nothing to with any "uneducated european decent sailor who couldn't pronounce the country Niger correctly" and everything to do with a slur on the Spanish word "negro," which means "black."

edit: "Niger" is also Latin for "black." The Niger River literally translated into English is the "Black River."
