Some would argue that questioning the legitimacy of a President-elect is a smear, although Lewis certainly has the right to make that case if he so chooses.

I think what is most frustrating for the left is that they've constructed certain third rails within the context of shaping political dialogue. Yet those rules don't seem to apply to Trump. He keep doubling down and stepping even further onto that third rail with every Tweet. Far greater men have been taken down for doing or saying far less than Trump.

I will never support what Trump says.

I do enjoy watching him change the rules of the game, and find it curious that he of all people figured out how to do it

So...changing the "rules of the game" is spreading dubious allegations and acting like a petulant child on Twitter?!.Wow, we really have evolved here. Get used to being questioned Mr President. This is the job you signed up for. People will only put up with whiny spoiled children for so long.

His approval rate is around 37%, so the idea that he isn't affected by this is kind of wrong.

Isn't this all beside the point? Trump, as usual, made false allegations against someone simply because they dared to criticize him. This time he made the mistake of trying to smear someone whose integrity is so far above his that it's almost comical. And on MLK Day weekend, no less.

Yeh, but it'll play well to the bigotry in his base, and that's all that really matters. Us vs Them.

Trump will fail because he's obsessed with winning any challenge, with doing battle rather than finding common ground. That's what's happening here.

Remember when he said to black Americans "What do you have to lose?" He just threw away an opportunity to make that credible. He could have taken it the other way, expressed dismay at Lewis' remarks, promised to earn his trust & that of all black Americans.

Not that it would have been sincere- Repubs seldom are- but he didn't have to take a divisive stand & sling shit at Lewis, either.

goddamn, you're a shallow little fool.
I'm a beast, you're probably just overweight by posting on here every day about wah wah wah Trump. He won, you and Lewis lost so someone pass me the popcorn so I can be entertained some more. Trump has proven he can damage your rep so hard it'll leave your head spinning by a single little Tweet. Yet more people want to test him and get embarrassed. Be his guest.

I told y'all Hillary would be the 18th challenger to get scalped by the Donald and you laughed. Who's laughing now? See you in DC on the 20th if you're man enough. :smirk::smirk::smirk:

Reality TV wins :p How embarrassing is that.

He has already the lowest approval rating for a president before being sworn in, away we go.

You would probably come up with a rationale for voting Kim Kardashian into office.

...but he didn't have to take a divisive stand...

Slandering the President as illegitimate is the divisive action. Hitting back is merely par the course.
"Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart”
Calling out Lewis personally to do better for his constituency. You act as if he said something truly terrible.

Trump has been slandering a lawful President for a long time then ...

He said the mans district was in horrible shape and falling apart which isn't true. Isn't telling lies because someone tweaked your ego truly terrible?

It's the "in horrible shape and falling apart" claim that most people have issue with. It's an exaggeration at best, outright false at worst, and Trump is really just trying to distract from criticism rather than make a meaningful retort. "My critic is less than perfect, therefore you must ignore what he says." I want to see what happens if Pope Francis ever criticizes Trump, even if it's likely to be indirectly -- the backlash when Trump invariably insults the world's most important religious figure would be priceless.

I thought it had already happened.

Trump could start shooting people while being sworn into office and some people would justify it.

"Look, Trump is a man of action"

For a country that just elected Trump, how well could it really be doing?

If that statement re: Atlanta really bothers you, I'd love to see Trump and company challenged to backup his claims.
Not just "he's racist and horrible" for speaking back to John Lewis. Turn this into a factual case of him lying, if that is what happened.

He's dog-whistling bigotry about urban blacks. Any questions?

In the article reporting Trump's tweet in my morning paper, the article pointed out the headquarters of Coca-Cola and two airlines are in Lewis' district, along with several universities and the average median income in that district is $73,000. In Trump's view black=inner city poverty, but don't worry he's not racist, he's just been talking out his ass again.

I'm having a hard time being upset over lewis's comments. I want to be upset but I'm trying hard not to laugh at the irony.

I do like the extra little dig Trump gave to Lewis with Trump's cancellation of his planned visit to the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture on Monday, MLK Day.

Just such petty behavior.
