News Renoir R7 4800U results leaked from Lenovo Yoga Slim 7-14ARE review

Well, well, this was very unexpected (and I'm afraid will soon be taken down) but I accidentally stumbled on Renoir R7 4800U results running in a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7-14ARE (link dead, review still hidden) on notebookcheck!

How did I find the results:
I was looking at their Geforce MX350 review results and typed "Vega 11" into the checkbox for comparison. Got no results. Then tried "Vega 8" expecting to find any 3500U results. Instead stumbled on the results from a yet-to-be-released 4800u review!

You can try it yourself just. just type "4800U" into any searchbox (below a result block) and press "search".

I did it in both the MX350 review and the review of this excellent Matebook D-14 (which is running on a 3500U and achieving an insane 14h browsing test battery life on a 57Wh battery !).

This is the gallery of screenshots I took, in case they pull the results from the database:

Results?

The CPU is *insane* for multithreaded work and even in ST Cinebench C15 it's neck-to-neck with Core i7-1065G7 (183 vs 182 points) MT is just no competition: 1570 on the first run 1490 on the 50th consecutive run! While Ice-Lake is 650 and drops to 590 (some laptops like Lenovo Ideapad S340 get 740 on first run but then trottle to 470).

The GPU is almost as good as the 350MX (-5% in gams):

TL DR;
  • Very capable Single threaded perf (as good as Ice Lake in Cinebench, probably a bit slower in geekbench, etc)
  • Absolutelly insane MT perf (almost 2.5x the competition in CB)
  • Battery life is decent but has room for improvement in new desings. (The Matebook 14 beats it, but is by far the best 3500u implementation) still beats Ice-lake though :D
  • 4800U's Vega 8 is as fast as 350MX in 3Dmark, sightly slower (5%) in actual games.

Overall looks very promising, can't wait for full reviews.

Gaming perf seems to be more or less in line with a 3200G with DDR4-3200 rams, what is impressive for a 15W APU. I wonder what the average clocks are while gaming, i think they nailed the power distribution.

I expected more of the MX350.

CPU perf is a little bit short of a 3600, again impresive for 15W.

Renoir is on my wishlist, but I'm going to holdout for the 16-24 gigabyte LPDDR4X-4266 MHz models. Literally can't say no with 8-cores and a 1.75 GHz GPU clock. Coming out with way better than a FX-9590 at ~7.7 GHz/2 volt scores in CB15 within a 15W product.

While sustained performance is pretty impressive, I'd rather wait for some more testing, especially ST benchmarks, as Cinebench quite clearly favours AMD.

I think most of the RDNA1 effectiveness came from the 7nm process not the architecture itself, while for RDNA2 it has to come from the architecture since manufacturing process stays the same. Now I can fully believe that AMD can achieve that claimed 50% if they implement whatever they did to those GCN cores in Renoir to RDNA2.

As for the test results, these are actually quite insane indeed, thats 1700x/2700 perfomance in ~15-25W.

Even AMD claims 4800U is only 90% faster than 1065G7 in R20, so I would take this data with a grain of salt until we see more results (maybe it was TDP up to 25W ?). In any case, the real competitor for MT workloads will be Comet Lake U with six cores, although that shows what a failure 10 nm really is.

The number of times I need to post this same image is outstanding. Most of the gains for RDNA1 were uArch, not process.

This graph has Comet Lake U included. Renoir is still very lonely at the top.

I agree it's probably a 25W SKU and Cinebench is AMD's strongest benchmark, but still this CPU will be a mobile-workstation monster. Looking forward to use it for programmig work. My 6-core 45W Coffe-Lake H is quite good at that, but gets uncomfortably hot while working (multiple micro-services in docker, IDEs incremental compile, unit test and integration tests running in the background, which all scale to all the cores) A 15-25W Renoir seems to be exactly what the doctor ordered, loses less performance on sustained use (very noticable to me).

Long time since I was active on these forums, wow. Had to sign in just to give the OP kudos for a great find. Seems like the H-series laptops at least are launching on the 16th, hope the date is the same for the U-series and that we'll see some good day 1 reviews. While I would really have liked a SKU with a stronger GPU (say, 6c12CU) this still looks very good. That close to the MX350 is really impressive even at 25W, considering that the MX350 consumes that alone and has a dedicated 64-bit GDDR5 bus. This definitely might tempt me to get a new laptop this year (though the prospect of LPDDR5 + Navi might have me wait another year), and desktop Renoir is going in a HTPC build this year for sure.
