My ears are literally bleeding from the last call I took.

A user called me up to help her get a program installed. She clicked a link on an email and it was not downloading(I think it was she just didn't know where).

Sent her a link in an instant message with a webpage that she could download it from. She said it still wasn't working.

Told her to right click and save as, found out it was going to the temp folder.

Walked her through saving it to her desktop.

"Ok, now how do I get to it?", her

"Go to you desktop and click on it", me

"Where is that?", her

"Huh?", me

"The desktop, how do I get to it", her

"Umm, it's the area you get when you first login", me

"I'm confused, you mean My Computer...", her

"You can get to that?" Me, surprised

"Yeah, but where is the desktop at?", her.

"Click on the down error next My computer and select it", me

"There is no down arrow", her

"In the address field", me

"Still don't see it", her

"You see where it says 3.5 floppy, CD, and C:?", me

"Yeah", her

"look right above that and you should see My computer" , me

"ok, I see it", her

"all the way to the right is an arrow button click it and find desktop", me

"ok, found it", her

"double click it", me

<launches a setup program>

"ok, now what?", her

"You install it and put in the information that it asks", me

"I need an id?", her

"Yes" , me

"ok, then what", her

"You finish installing it then use it", me

"ok, let me write this down...go to my computer, go to desktop, click on 'programname-setup.exe', then use it", her

"You have to finish installing it before you try and use it", me

"ok, thanks!"

You're kidding? An interface designer doesn't know how to navigate windows?

She had left the project for 3 years and they voluntarily got her back for some reason.

When she asked "where is the desktop?" I probably would have told her to "Hold down the Windows key and press 'D'." Ah, shortcuts don't always work well with n00bs I guess.

I commend all the techs who have the patience to do step-by-step instructions with computer-challenged people...

I don't have the patience to go through that with mom, let alone strangers...

Damn, and here I am giving support to people who know how to use a hexeditor and who fix a problem with damaged binary files themselves :)

Ok, most users aren't that smart either, but a few are :p

Just because you can solve easy computer problems doesn't necessarily make you better than someone who can't.

Call for Microsoft Tech support when reactivating windows XP and meet "Glen" who strangely has a thick Indian accent for someone with such an american name... its fun having them read a list of numbers to you.

i am better than those that cannot solve easy computer problems
i just don't want to help anyone, at least not by talking to them
now if i can remote into the problem PC and just fix it, that is fine, i just don't want to talk to the (l)user
