Remember when TVs had knobs ?

knobs, and wood cabinets. gosh i miss wood cabinets. now everything is black or silver (the only reason sony did that is so everyone has to buy all-new electronics). what if i don't want an art-deco living room?
 
Back in the stone age of my childhood our black and white TV only had 4 stations(2,4,7, & 9) and one was a Canadian one that didn't come on until the afternoon and went off at 9pm.

Remember when Remote Controls had mechanical buttons and actually made a 'click' noise (hense the term 'clicker')
 
Ahhhh knobs and clickers, the memories! I remember coming home from school, going downstairs, turning on that TV and realizing it wasnt' on that right (UHF?) channel.

At which point I would do that crazy, wheel of fortune....mega-spin. I know there are people who know what I'm talking about, the noise was so soothing, sorta like a fast "clickity-clickity-clickity-clickity" super spin.

I still remember when my parents came home with that Sony Betamax machine w/a thing called a 'remote' - funny thing was that the remote was attatched by a 15 cable.

We used to have an itty bitty B/W that sat upon our big wood color cabinet TV because the big one broke and we had no $$$ to fix it. 🙂
We went to Dart Drug to test our tubes, when they still had Dart Drugs.

I sure as hell remember, and I still have my console radio to this day, it's just been slightly "Updated" 😉

Yep, they worked on sound generated by small metal windchime like tuning bars inside.

I could get my friend's TV to change channels by jiggling my keys. 🙂

I remember when there was no cable. We had channel 2 (KCBS), 4 (KNBC), 5 (KTLA), 7 (KABC), 11 (KTTV) and 13 (KCOP) in the LA area.

I remember when the first cable to show up in our area was HBO only, and people started having HBO boxes on top of their TVs.

I remember when cable porn actually showed something.
 
I remember B&W TV's & getting 2 channels...

It's a different world, my dad would freak on my current TV/Sat/PVR/home theater if he was alive🙁
 
i bet most of the people who frequent ATOT have never seen a black and white only television (with no remote, no cable attachment, no VHF)

probably don't have a clue what rabbit ears are either..eh?

We never had rabbit ears. My father had a rooftop antenna since the 50s. 🙂

But a lot of people are seeing rabbit ears now, as they use them to get local channels with their Dish or DirecTV. 🙂
 
My dad put up a 40 foot utility pole next to the house, monster antenna & rotator so we could get stations from >100 miles away...

He was l33t😀
 
When we were kids we had a Magnavox Color Console and it had a UHF 'sonic' remote. It had a mini-speaker in it and used high pitched audio for the commands. Was pretty cool. That was after my E.E. dad spent a lot of time changing tubes in the old set and finally gave up and bought the new one.

Back then it was not common to have TV's in every room, just the family/living room.

When I was ~12-13 I finally was able to get my own set. It was a 13" Color set with nobs. I had that set through college, probably about 10yrs. The UHF nob broke off after about 5-6 and I had to pull of the VHF nob to change the UHF channels. Later when I got a VCR (finally) I had it set on channel 3 and used a vcr to change the channels (which also had a remote!).

Then I ended up putting together my ghetto surround system in my bedroom I had big honkin speakers all around and the 13" set to watch movies on. Heh! Then I got a better job and got my 27" TV Set which I still have (and it's been repaired once now...).

Anyone remember the TV's that had a row of touchsensitive metal buttons, some sony's had them. You preset them to the channels of your choice (each one had a dial under a hidden control panel) so you could only access like 12-15 channels at any given time. They had a remote with 'up/down' and it would go up down the preset list. My sisters ended up getting the cheap version of that and after a few years if you touched the buttons after turning the set on it'd shock you. Fortunately we had the remotes still.

What about that remote that some sets had that had 4 buttons. Volume Up / Down and Channel Up / Down. And to turn the tv on you pressed volume up and to turn it off you held volume down until it turned off.

Our was like that don't remember what brand, but we bought it from sears. We could also tune in HBO for free. 🙂
 
Back when children were used as remote controls. I was a remote control for several years until the old tv finally died.

Good old days... the TV in my room growing up in the 70s was a color 17" Heath kit. 😎
