Remember the Commodore 64

I used to love that system. The C64 is the reason I'm a video game junkie to this day. I played my first rpg on c64, wrote my first program on one.

I could go on and on about all the games I used to play on that system

Zorro
Yie Ar Kung Fu
Karateka
Prince Of Persia
Airborne Ranger
Elevator Action
Impossible Mission
The Last Ninja
Bruce Lee
Zork

🙂😎

C64 was my first computer, games like Manic miner,Hunchback,Cavalon,Jetset Willy I`ve fond memories of 🙂.

I still have mine sitting in my closet. It even has the floppy drive with it, which is bigger than the freaking computer itself!

never actually had the pleasure of playing on one.. but my dad got one when it came out. for some reason we never opened it. shortly afterwards, got an apple ii/c computer.. still had it in the original box and everything (computer & disk drive) up until a month or two ago when we donated it to the salvation army.. was thinking about selling it on e-gay, but when i checked, they were going really cheap.. so didnt bother. 🙂

Wow does that bring back memories. How about these ones:

Defender of the Crown
Pirates!
Commando
1942
Colonial Conquest
Any Ultima (I logged countless hours playing those games)
Phantasia

i never had any of those games for my commodore 64/128!! i do have a modem for it but my mom wouldnt pay 13 bucks a month for the access. anyone want to buy it? i still have the 5.25 drive and monitor and even a dot matrix printer!!

loosbrew

Ahhhh...Skate or Die, California Games, Leisure Suit Larry ( I think they had it for the C64, I know there was one for the Amiga), Maniac Mansion....
sniff sniff...I loved that machine!

oh i forgot about skate or die, i used to play that for hours

maniac mansion was a good one too

damn that purple tentacle

I remember that I had about 250 disks filled with games. I was such a nerd that my life revolved around my C64. I remember the awesome feeling I would get when I would find a new friend that had a ton of games that I didn't have. I had the FASTLOAD cartridge (so that it would only take 2 hours to load a game), two 1541 drives, about 3 dozen joysticks (I would break one every couple of weeks), the 1720(?) monitor. I remember the feeling of jealousy when one of my best friends got a C128. I had every program catalogued using the FASTCAT program.

I also remember getting those COMMODORE magazines (and a bunch of others) and then spending hours typing in the code to "program" my first games. I also remember those thousand lines of machine code that would give you a checkstring at the end of each line. If you typed in the numbers correctly a 2-digit verification number would appear. Wow, what a waste of time. I also remember getting those dirty videogames like:

Sex Games
Sam Fox strip poker
etc...

[reminiscing]

My C64 still works. It's all set up on a desk in my attic, ready to go whenever I need to play really old games, or write some crap in simon's basic. 🙂

List of stuff that still works:

Commodore 64 (the original, round-looking unit)
Three 1541 disk drives
Two 1571 disk drives
Two printers
Two tape drives
Fast Load cartridge
A thing that goes into the cartridge port and lets you plug in up to 8 cartridges
A couple games on cartridges
A 300 baud modem
Joysticks of all shapes and sizes
A 1300 mouse

Some software:

GEOS (kinda like windows)
QuantumLink (AOL)
A bunch of games, at least 1000
Easy Script (a word processor with a lot of features)

Space Taxi....up please.

I had the 2 Commodores, 1541 DD, Indus GT disk drive, Hayes 300 baud modem, Okidata 9 pin printer, and my RCA 19" goldfish bowl TV.

Man this is bringing back such memories. We had this users group on base at the rec center where all they would do was copy stuff. One day a guy brought his brand spanking new Amiga 1000 and we were all awed and amazed as he showed us Deluxe Paint and some other games like Defender of the Crown.
I was the only person in there with a Commodore Plus/4 but after being laughed at, i saved up and bought a 64 and a 1541. I used this POS 5" TV that came with my parents conversion van. It was quite the setup I tell ya.
I remember GEOS. It never worked with the POS 51/4" drive my dad originally bought for the Plus/4 but worked flawlessly on the 1541 I bought later.

I still have an old old copy of Run Tips and Tricks special order magazine plus a couple Run and Commodore magazines. Remember the SYS 49152 songs? you would do a load "songname",8,1 and then type SYS 49152 to get them to play. I had disks full of those and SIDPlayer songs.

Ack, I need to get to work and stop reminecsing...

Oh man, I go back beyond that! I had the whole slew of Commodore computers between the PET and the Amiga (wow, I wish I had the money for the Amiga back then.

I had an account on CompuServe with the 300 baud modem. Never knew how to turn off the duplex feature online. everything I typed llooookkeeddd lliikkee tthhiiss.

I had those cartridge games for the Vic20 like Omgea Race and those neat text adventure games like Pirate Island and a dracula game (open coffin, look lock, break lock, close coffin - oops, I gave it away!) I think the writer (or game company?) was called Scott Adams adventures. I think Infocom then took over.

But yeah I have the Vic20, Com64 and 128 with software, games, and hardware (like that silly light pen I waved in front of my TV set). I took the 128 to college with me (yup, I'm THAT old 😛). I bought the color thermal printer to print out my papers and projects. The funny thing is that I went cheap and bought the thermal paper instead of the color wax cartridge. I had to keep the paper in the fridge because it would discolor (like photographic paper), also my teachers would bitch at me to photocopy my work first because if I handed them the thermal paper originals they'd curl up and turn black from the heat!!

They were all boxed up and stored in one of my closets until that "weird" thing that happened at 12:01 01/01/00....

Amigaman, you just brought up some buried memories for me. I totally remember some of those songs. I remember someone programmed Stairway to Heaven and the screen would turn blue and start playing. I thought it was the coolest thing.

Oh cool!

This thread brought back some great memories. I searched google for Scott Adam's Adventures and guess what, he's still alive and has his own webpage (I mean, geez, he was 'old' when I was a pup). It looks like you can dowload some of his old games to play.

Linkified for your amusement.

Oh, the trusty C64... I had the old version too! I had the original tape drive, and 1541 disk-drive... I later upgraded to C128.

Oh, the games... Alter Ego (still the best game there is IMO!), Test Drive, Zaxxon, Paperboy, Spy vs. Spy, Ultima IV (Say hi to 18-hour gaming sessions!)...

I had both the portable color C64 and the desktop C128, there was one game that involved being on some sort of train and bypassing dams and enemy airplanes, man I wish they would bring that back.

My dad bought the Commodore VIC-20 when it first came out.....I remember playing games on the thing using a casette tape drive that would plug into the back of the VIC.

We used to hit 'play' on the tape and then come back like 30 minutes later for our games to finish loading (keep in mind that these games were only like 3-4 K each)!!!

When we upgraded to the C64, I had the pleasure of owning a disk drive. This made loading games much quicker...it only took like 4-5 mins for a game to load up.

I remember seeing somewhere a Windows based emulator for the C-64. Does anyone know about this? Or how to get the emulator to load up C-64 games?? That would be cool if I could load up some old C64 games onto my PC.

This post is killing me. Every five minutes or so that goes by, I remember another game that I was addicted to. Whomever said that games back then seemed more fun had it right on the money. Does anybody remember:

Ghostbusters
The Bard's Tale
Ghosts & Goblins
Raid over Moscow
Archon
The Giana Sisters
BC's Quest for Tires
Beach Head
Gauntlet
Fort Apocalypse.

Now I really wish I still had my Commodore 64. Has anybody ever tried any of those emulators? It appears as if you can play all of the old games through an emulator (and all of the downloads are free). There are some sites that seem to have EVERY game that you can think of. Which are the good emulators and is it complicated to set up?
