Remember the Commodore 64?

Yup. Also remember the Alamo as well.😛

My grandfather had a Commodore 64 - he'd let me play Frogger on it; there was one other game, don't remember the name. You controlled a boat in the water streets of Italy, and you had to catch ducks as they jumped off buildings, and at the same time, avoid the hippopotamus under the water, or else he'd tip the boat over. It was quite a decent string of commands he'd have to type in just to get them to run. No double-click.🙂

Hey...does anyone remember the Coleco Adam. That was my first computer..it came with that noisy as all daisy wheel printer...

I grew up in Europe, and as such I had another computer - the Sinclair ZX Spectrum 🙂 more or less similar... cassette tape and the rest...

man oh man are guys bringing back the memories. countless hours on those "flight sims" and silent service. is there a pc emulator for the c64?

Why has no one mentioned "Impossible Mission"? That was the best, had it on cartridge aswell as "BC Quest for tires".

Old times...

What a game that was, how many puzzle pieces was there? Must have been thousands.
I still have my 64 and my vic 20 along with the sincliair that was a kit.
I got really good a commodore basic and cracked a lot of games, some of the anti copy things were really distructive they would speed up your floppy drive to the point that it would burn out and they were expensive. I can remember my first printer and it did not have true decenders so the print looked really funny. I have 2 600 baud modems still in the box, I would dial up my friend and we would chat, pretty stupid now that I think of it.

Bleep

If you like old C64 games, just get an emulator - there are a few sites totally dedicated to c64 emulations.

Also, check out Home of the Underdogs (yahoo search it) for a lot of kool abandonware.

the C64 was my very first (and best!) computer! And hey, the "bootup" time still kicks the crap out of any computer we're running today! 😉 (yeah, yeah, I know, the "load" times sucked, but the bootup time can't be beat! 😉 )

yeah:
pirates! (how many 24-days did I spend on that game!)
archon
ultima series
raid over bungeling bay
beach head
all of Microprose's games (F-15, silent service, Red Storm Rising, F-19 Stealth, Airbore Ranger, etc, etc)
4th & inches
carriers at war
ea's racing construction (destruction?) set
...

and so many others I can't think of at the moment.

I've still got my original C64 (non-working) and another C64 (replacement, working) and the 1541 drive and the 1702(?) monitor down the basement, plus my purchased games/software, manuals, etc. I just got the stuff together last week, as I was planning on finally parting with it 🙁 (sell on ebay or something)

Uh oh, my name is Jim, should I be worried? 😱

I tried building one of those Sinclair ZX computers, the early ones with only 1 k of RAM... the thing never worked and I think I spent $200... er, wasted $200.

Raid Over Bungeling Bay was a pretty fun game for it's time. I still have it BTW.

Anyone hear of the "ADAM"? It had a tape deck - the only thing I did with it was play some Buck Rogers game that came with it

=)

And remember Archon?

Archon was that chess type game, where the pawns had like sticks, while the Queens had some bazooka type weapon, right?
If not, does anyone know what game that was, it rocked! 🙂

Anyway, I liked the Amiga better, simply the best computer ever made.
The Spectra ZX(sp?) was nice too 🙂

I grew up in Europe as well and I had the C-128. From your name, I gather you're from Sweden?

The C64 had many third party products that greatly improved load time. I had a cartridge that improved load time about 1500% percent.

Gawd, I miss that thing. It's amazing how my MS keyboard is just as large as my C64, but it's only a keyboard!

Yes, that was Archon. here's some screenshots from the original game:

hey, looks like somebody's working on a new version of the game...supposedly freeware, and supposedly able to be played over network/internet! cool! I'm definitely bookmarking this site:

My favorite game for the C64 was Destroyer. You were in control of a Destroyer and had to do various missions (hunt submarines, sink other ships, escort ships, shell land targets, etc...). I spent many hours with that one.

Commodore 64?

No, I started my computer experience with a mighty Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48k, and let me tell you ... it rocked!

I still have it, together with 2 cassette decks, each with a hole to enable direct access to the head, so I could fine-tune for proper loading 😀, also a Joystick (with his box interface 🙂), and a termal printer!!!! Beat that rig!!!

And played great games as: Manic Miner, Target Renegade, Andoids, Chucky Egg, Dizzy, Rambo, Lotus (the one chasing drug dealers in a city, with traffic and everything), some kind of Elite game (space simulator anyway 🙂), Moon Base ... the list goes on and on ...

And I need NO overclocking for it to coope with them 🙂

Also my father exchanged the CPU case 🙂 for a new model (better and big keyboard), since he used to work with the machine! (Can you imagine working with it? 😀) ... need no extra fan cooler ... 🙂

Those were the times ... those were the games ... and I still leave some great ones out ...

About 5 mins to load Target Renegade, plus 3 min for each level, then it didn't load the 4th level and wasted 6 hours play 😀 ... I don't even dare to count the time I lost with this system ... I don't really have any clue ... yes I have ... a LIFE! 🙂

I loved Lotus so much, I had one of the cassette decks tuned to load it 🙂

Edit:

Oh, I forgot, how could I forgot ...

... I even made some game copy back then, with nothing more then the 2 cassette decks I had ... without cables 🙂 ... I just put the decks over each other, one with the speaker directly over the other's mic ... full sound, and everythig else quited, so I could record with best quality!!! AHAHAH!!! What a journey! And you know what? It worked!!! Yep, lot's of work, but worked 😀 ... latter one I used a cable to connect both decks ... now that was a great copy-game machine 🙂

There was no copy-protection, CD-Key, nothing ... just the real deal!

yeah, Destroyer was a cool game. it felt more "arcadey" than say the microprose games, but it *was* a blast to play. That was by Epyx, right? Ahhh, Epyx. Who can forget having a half-dozen or so friends huddled around the computer, passing the joysticks, playing good ol' Summer Games (and Summer Games II and Winter Games and World Games...). ahh, those were the days...
😱

I can't believe all you Mircoprose fans forgot about - GUNSHIP! Best heli sim for the C-64, until the Amiga version came out. 😉

I think this game was the first one I actually bought too. You couldn't play without the manuals which contained the plane image/code verification (awesome copy protection for the time), and the keyboard overlay for all the controls.

😱 you're absolutely right, gunship, certainly i should have mentioned THAT Microprose game by name. THAT GAME ROCKED! That was *THE* helicopter sim, and continued it's reign for a long long time, probably until Jane's Longbow came along I'd say... (and Andy Hollis was designer for both of those games...so it took Andy himself to eventually outdo his earlier Gunship greatness! 😉 )

My first purchased game for my C64 was Microprose's original F-15 Strike Eagle (amusingly, I think the first game that I bought for a PC (once I made the move to IBM/PC) was their F-15 Strike Eagle III).

i found a page with a couple screenshots from the original F-15 game, from way back in 1984...take a peek
here...ahh, wireframe/grid for ground, wireframe planes, yessirree, those were the days... 😉
