Remember when right clicking in a FPS caused the weapon to do something cool and different?

I sure miss it.

That was my first thought.

Seems like ever since Doom 3 the developers have been more interested in graphics than gameplay.

Alt-fire going away is just another example of how they put less effort into whats important.

You know what I miss too, remember in Half Life 1 the alt fire for the rocket launcher caused it to follow the red dot around. I think they did that in Half Life 2 but I think it may have been one of the episodes that brought it back.

Never seen it in another game, it was one of the most fun gimicks in my opinion.

I miss creative and interesting weapons in general. Most games these days just have the usual selection of quasi-realistic stuff like a pistol, a few ARs, a shotgun, and a rocket or grenade launcher.

The last game I played that had genuinely unique weapons was Unreal 2. UT3 also has fairly good stuff but it's basically the same selection from the previous games.

The original Half Life 2 did it, on one of the missions you had to direct the rocket to prevent a Combine chopper's auto defenses from destroying, it was pretty darn great.

Yeah, HL2 did the red dot thing with the rockets, but that was the only firing mode.

I think my favorite alt-fire was in the original Unreal Tournament. Alt-fire with your basic pistol made you fire "gangsta style" which gave you a higher rate of fire but less accuracy. Lots of fun to do while dual wielding.

Yeah not that you mention it, alt-fire really was a great thing, I guess shooters nowadays have turned focus to a more realistic and "tactical" approach.

Alt Fire is a great feature.

It is an easy way for a developer to double the amount of weapons. A weapon with two different attack types might as well be two different weapons.

UT has always done this well.... The best was the Shock Rifle. Shooting a Ball of Energy at someone and then sniping it with the alt fire Railgun-type shot to explode it.

Inventiveness combined with utility is what we crave.

UT is the best example of Alt Fire IMO. Cool guns with cool combos and options, gotta give UT3 credit for that :)

Unreal Series has always been excellent with weapon variety. Too many games have the standard fare of pistols, assault rifles, and shotguns today.

Unreal 2 had some pretty interesting weapons like the Flamethrower, Shock Lance, and Spider Gun in addition to having alternate fire for every weapon in the game.

Despite not being popular I loved Unreal 2 for a number of reasons. The weapons were a huge part of my enjoyment.
Also good were Red Faction, Serious Sam, and Deus Ex.
The weapons in Deus Ex were functional but not overpowering, you actually had to use them properly to get results.

But I still think of the classic Unreal/UT weapons as my faves. The buzzsaw gun was freaking awesome. The totally different firing modes of the energy weapons made me happy too.

You guys also might wanna checkout the Painkiller series.

OH FUCK I CANT BELIEVE WE FORGOT ABOUT DUKE NUKEM!!!!
Ice guns, hi-speed rocket launchers, shrink rays, laser tripwire bombs, good shit all around.

i think unreal2 still has one of the, if not the, best flamethrowers ever.

i also liked most/all of the weapons from the original unreal. the stinger and the minigun were probably my favorites :)

My favorite game with suspense to each new weapon was Turok on N64. The first time I got the cannon that was a nuke was awesome!
