I don't really miss it honestly. UT games had the biggest differentiation but weapons went from Spam to Super Spam with alt-fire...great. I like newer games that focus on attachments to modify weapon functionality. :)

The some attachments in Crysis are a lot like alt-fire like the grenade launcher, tranquilizer, and freeze ray.

The hand held nuke, mines, demo packs, and miniguns are pretty interesting weapons too.

Crysis had reasonably good weapons, but this thing was a joke. It was basically just a missile launcher. Its explosion effect was some low resolution sprite that I've seen in other games in the past, nothing like a nuke at all.

Now it's either scope or grenade launcher.

Bioshock was the only recent game I can think of with a 'real' alt-fire. Back then, I think Blood was pretty amazing. Not to mention 'guns akimbo'...drool.

Blood 2 was pretty great, but for whatever reason it came at point in my life where I wasn't playing games as much so I never got into it like I did the original. If there was a re-make I'd be seriously interested, it's Blood.

Honestly I am not a fan of alt fire weapons, they generally upset the power balance between different guns and are not even remotely realistic/practical.

There's a freeze ray in crysis?

Get a MOAC (ice bolt shooting mini gun) and then get the MOAR attachment. There's also a MOAR equipped hummer. It was pretty fun to grief teammates with it on mp.

Patch 1.2 also made the singularity tank fun to shoot, even if it's still useless.

CS:S has alt fire... but only for a few guns and for an actual purpose. I love alt fire when it actually does something useful, like a shotty to a sniper sort of thing.

oh shit man, using those trip wires in the duke nukem was awesome. that's almost all me and my friend ever used. like in zero hour there were the regular laser trips and then there were those electricity based ones.

can't beat putting a laser trip bomb on a wall opposite a teleport and waiting on some to teleport into it ;)

also can't forget those explosive shotguns shells or the plasma rifle from DN64. charging it up made it a monster.

same with the proximity mines from the original goldeneye. those were all we ever used. made big ass domino like traps with them in small hallways.

Blood had some great weapons.

Flare gun!

Blood II's expansion pack had the silver sphere from Phantasm :D

Monolith really needs to do a remake of the 2 blood games in their Project Origin Engine. Some of the funnest and funniest games ever....forget about Duke Nukem.

The gun from Portal has an alt fire!

Most inventive use for an alternate fire I've ever encountered, too. Many of Valve's games use the right click for some other function, though they are usually quite simple (grenade on rifle, double shotgun blast, sweet flying orb that incinerates multiple enemies).

In Crysis, adding/removing attachments or changing fire modes are actions with a time duration, with only a cosmetic difference to the attachment/firemode modeled as a separate weapon. Alt-fire is fundamentally different, as it gives you *instantaneous* access to an action other than primary fire.

Personally, I find that an indirect alt-fire (whether ballistic, homing, guided, area effect etc) on a weapon where primary fire is direct is a particularly good gameplay element, contributes to deeper tactics and more dynamic, active play. It rewards the ability to anticipate and outplay the opponent as opposed to twitch skill.

In summary, more games with creative weapons and alt fire please.

Or mapped to an extra mouse button. ;)

I like how to Pyro has the compressed air blast. Hope to see more alt-fire modes in future TF updates. :)

Blood was definitely my favorite game for weapons.

Basically, I loved torching the Latin-screaming priests, and hearing them scream "IT BURNS, IT BURNS"; better yet, tossing a stick of dynamite around the corner where you knew that baddies were, and seeing gibs fly all over the place.

That was the first game I remember playing where you could bounce explosives 'round the corner.

Good times.
