one more quick question guys. could anyone tell me where i could find some information regarding what each and everything in the registry means and or is used for? you are probably asking yourself why? i just want to extend my computer knowledge a bit. lol thanks in advance for any and all help. DALE

Good luck, MS doesn't document a lot of their keys and any program can add keys wherever they want. You can poke around MSDN or a certain product's docs to see if they document their keys, but you'll never find an exhaustive list of keys because it's not possible.

Clicky clicky. It's nowhere near a complete guide to the registry (I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy), but it has some links to suggested books and whatnot.

You would probably be wise to start with a good book on it. With some time you can get a pretty firm grasp on the system hive but the software hive is filled with mostly 3rd party information that varies too much for a definative guide.

Learn how to make a good backup of the registry and how to restore it in case of a dead server. After that, just go jump in to it feet first.
