I don't know how good they are about returns/refunds but if it's anywhere near as bad as my experience with tracking and cancelling orders in the last week, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't take the card back fine.

I ordered an X850 Pro last Tuesday (07/11/2006) evening, after hours, and submitted a cancellation request about a half an hour later when I saw the email stating a 3-4 week shipping time. Since then, I've emailed and called numerous times asking for information about my cancellation of this order. The website simply says that my cancellation has been "requested." Attempts to re-cancel the order online gives me an error saying I didn't provide a valid user ID and order ID, which I suspect may indicate that my order is no longer in their databases but I can't be sure. I don't know why it would continue to show up on the site as pending cancellation if that was the case, though. In any event, the only thing the email responses or live customer service reps have been able to tell me is that they received a request for cancellation. They don't know if anyone has looked at it, when it might be processed, or even if there's a chance that this order will still ship. Despite several vague responses about how long this process should take, ranging from within 24 hours (Five days ago) to by the end of the day (on Friday), it still is pending cancellation.

I've since placed an order for the X800 XL thinking that this was some kind of fluke. At this point, I don't think it is. Even though I ordered an in stock item before the shipping deadline on Friday (anything in stock ordered before noon EST is supposed to ship that day), they can't tell me whether or not my order was even processed that day. I have no tracking information, and that's all the CSRs could tell me.. That they didn't have tracking information from the courier so they couldn't tell me whether or not my order had been received by fulfillment.

Basically I feel like I could get better service from some random schmuck running an online store out of his garage at this point. This is especially ridiculous coming from one of the two major GPU manufacturer's own online storefront. This would be my first ATi card, but so far the experience has been so excruciatingly bad that I don't know that I even want one of these cards any longer. I've been reassured several times by CSRs that if they do ship the X850 along with the X800 XL, I could just return the unwanted X850 by submitting a returns/refund request. If making a request for my money back is as hard as finding out whether or not they even plan to ship my orders, I don't want the hassle. I'm considering calling my credit card company and trying to request some kind of stop-payment through them so that even if they attempt to fulfill my orders, they'll be rejected and can just deal with cancelling the order themselves.

I should've just stuck with Newegg.

After looking at both cards I ordered the X800XL. Both the X800XL and the X850Pro came up with free standard shipping - no code required.

18 months ago I got another deal from ShopATI - a 9600XT for $85 shipped and after trade-in of an old card.

We'll see if this refurb turns out as well as the last purchase.

Great price considering what is and isn't available today for AGP.

I do not think this is a card for playing modern games. This is a card for someone who would otherwise buy an Xbox 360 and wants to wait 6months or a person who wants to play +1yr old games
Considering most of us have a card that doesn't even make that chart, I think we'd take 32fps at those settings over 5 frames per minute. :p For a little more than $100, I'll gladly take a card that will let me play those games at slightly lower settings. This will easily keep my AGP system going long enough to wait out the Vista and DX10 launches. With that so close, a complete overhaul is just a waste of money.

And do you really have to run at 1600x1200, with AA4x, AF8x to be truly playing modern games? Not the linked to settings, exactly, I know.. But you can definitely enjoy a very playable experience with almost all modern games with these cards, even if it's not at super max cranked settings.

Just my two cents.

Ditto,
It will be possible to play the latest games at 1280x1024 with 2x aa and 4x af...
Thats more than enough for me!
:)

And the cost will be very sweet for me:
X800 XL - $119.00 - Radeon 9800 Pro on Ebay ($55.00) = $64.00 True cost of upgrade for double the framerates :)

Received my X800XL after 4 days, including the weekend. Installed so nice. Was able to get it up and running in minutes, and was not really too much longer than my old 5900XT. Runs quieter than I expected, and I can't see anything that might make it refurbished. Someone probably just wasn't satisfied with their purchase is all.

I ran 3DMark03 on it and came up with a score of 9993 and a 4538 on 3DMark05, without tweaking anything and using the driver that came with it. I haven't had any time to mess around with it since, but all looks great! This is a great improvement over my old 5900XT card and my first ATI experience. So far so good. My 5900XT got a 5634 3DMark03 score overclocked, so this is atleast 2x times better. A very nice upgrade for me, as I am selling my old card for $60!!!! :) Not a bad $53 upgrade I would say.

Decided to cancel my order and "just" get the x800xl. I'm sick of waiting, and don't feel like tinkering with switching out bios and unlocking pipes. Either way it will be better than the 9600xt I had or the current, *gasp*, integrated graphics I'm on.

Thanks to the OP. I upgraded from my 9600xt with the X800XL. Got it yesterday. LONG card, and I needed to plug it into my power supply! Got it up and running fast, and am playing BF2 with much better gfx detail, and it runs even smoother than it did on low details with my 9600xt.

After only one day, I'm very satisfied. Good deal. . .as long as it doesn't develop any problems. . .I'm not in the habit of buying refurbs.

I'm very tempted to upgrade from my 128 MB 9600XT. I have an Antec Smart Power 350 PS. I hope that will be enough.

Did you try running the card without plugging it in to the power supply and it didn't work, so you had to use a molex connector? I'm unclear as some folks say you don't need to plug it in to the power supply even though the connector is there.

Wow....seems you have not had a lot of experience with different video cards and what they can actually do.

Put the X800 in my daughters rig yesterday. It runs everything I tried VERY well. Doom3, Q4, Prey, WOW, COD2. I was quite suprised. I use to run those with her 6600GT and thought they ran ok, but this thing blows it away.

Ok I retract that statement. Sorry. It is just that I have a 20" display native at 16x12 so I think in my situation (with a northwood 478 P4 @3ghz), which must be the minority, I cant play the modern games at the speeds that everyone else seems to beable to play them at.

Quick info for some previous questions.

I have a Athlon XP 3000, and upgraded from a ti4200 to the x800xl. I use it for World of Warcraft, and frame rates are 50-100% higher and image quality is definitely better. I think frame rate would be higher but it's being held back by the CPU.

Power supply wise, I had problems running w/my Antec 350 Smartpower, but I also have 3 hard drives & 2 optical drives. I got frequent lockups, but unplugging one drive lowered the power enough to run stable. Then again, maybe that one drive was going out and taking the system with it?

Received my X800XL on Tuesday. VERY happy with the purchase so far.
I have been able to increase the image quality settings, while still doubling the frame rates of my old 9800 Pro.
Am running a 3200+ S754 Venice along with a single hard drive/optical drive on an Antec 350W without any problems.

Got my X800XL yesterday. Although in a plain box, all the accessories were included. Using the latest drivers scored 4917 on 3DMark 2005. Overclocked (429 core / 1080 memory), increased AGP aperture to 256 and hit a score of 5219.

All this with a 350W Enermax PSU, two HDD's, 2 optical drives, 1GB memory, multiple fans and an Athlon XP-M 2200 running at 2.31 GHz. No PSU issues so far. The video card seems perfect. New life for my aging system!

Thanks OP.

I have a p4-2.6gHz with 2 gig RAM, 2 HD's and 2 opticals, Soundblaster Live! 5.1 and little else. I'm using a Antec SmartBlue 350 PS, and I seem to be running without a problem.

For HGC:
I have NOT tried running the card without it also being plugged into the power supply. I saw the plug, hooked it up, and it ran, so never tried anything else.

I figure this will let me play the next gen games (the next UT, Quake Wars, Crysis), although the eye candy will be turned down. This will give me a few more years with this rig. For those on a low budget, that's important.

Can everyone that has gotten theirs in the mail say what condition it's in? I'm curious if everyone thus far has seen almost-new quality. This will help in my decision.

Looking at it up close I could not tell that the card was used. There was no dust, fingerprints, or even minor scratches that would indicate it being refurbished. So far I'm very happy with my purchase as I don't have to play any more choppy games even at the lowest settings! Man, games can be real distracting especially if you have more important things you should be doing!

BTW, the first time I inserted the card I forgot to plug in the Molex connector. When I powered up, a message in red ASCII text showed on my monitor notifying me to plug the power cord into the card. No harm done. :)

I received the refurbished X800XL AGP about a week and a half ago. As far as I can tell, it looked almost brand new. There were no visible signs of scratches, dents, or chipped pcb. It's been running without any problems. All of the accessories are included, but no free games. I'm not even sure if the retail comes with free games. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase.

I pulled the trigger and just ordered the X800XL for $119.00 with free s/h. There was about $9 in tax, and I am shipping it to TEXAS, where I will meet it with my comp just in time for QuakeCON!

They said the card will either ship from their California or Tennessee warehouse.

WOOOOOOOT!

I just ordered one, about 4 hours ago. Now the product is out of stock (in Canada), and I could have to wait over 4 weeks before the delivery! Is anyone in the same situation? Is it possible to buy from ati US in Canada? 1 month is looooooooooooooong!

Just got mine last night, and another gig of ram...i played around with half-life 2 at 1440 x 900 with 2xAA and 4xAF and it wasn't skipping a beat. Maybe I'll throw some FRAPS on and see what FPS i'm getting...and maybe i'll do a little OC'ing.

Edit: mine came in a brown box...there were a couple of scratches on the cooler, but the card works fine. Mine came with the manual, cd, power cable extender, dvd to vga adapter, component cable, and s-video/yellow video cable. I'm happy with my purchase so far...*knocks on wood*

I got my X800XL last week. Installed it on a Dell 4550 2.4GHz. No problem with its 250W power supply (I have only one HD). Vast improvement since I upgraded from a 4200Ti, bought with that system. It was a stretch to connect the power cable, but it worked fine.

The card looked absolutely new. No tiny scratches in the contacts, no dust at all. Came in a brown box with a CD and the manual. Nothing else.

Adding more ram tonite. Hoping for 2 more years out of that system.

I have P4 2.4/1meg/533, 1 gig ddr, and 9800pro... do you think the 800xl is a worthy upgrade for ~70 or will it be held back by the cpu to the point that i wont notice a diff?

I just want a more steady framerate in source and the ability to play fear at better then 800x600 before I upgrade to all the new ****** in maybe 6 months..

I was running my P4 2.8/512k/533, 1.5 GB DDR400, x800xl...all stock speeds...half-life 2 and day of defeat: source at 1440x900 (native res of my widescreen) with 2xAA and 4xAF...and just watching the framerates on fraps, I was getting anywhere from 30-70 fps consistantly depending on the environment. (there were hiccups now and again, but rarely)

So, depending on what resolution you are going to play anything source at, I would say it would definitely be a nice step up if you want the extra eye candy. You just need to decide if it's worth it to you.

Thanks to the OP, I placed my order on the 07/12 for X800XL(price $119 with free shipping). The card arrived in three business days. I don't know if this card is used/refurb or not. The heat sink does not have any ATI sticker on it. It's just bare metal. I chose X800XL because I have a shuttle SN95G5 and I had only one slot to play with. Privious to this, I have been using Radeon 9800Pro. Compared to 9800Pro this X800XL works much better, and I'm happy to have ordered this card at this price. I've been using this card since 07/16 and haven't had any problems since then. I mainly play World of Warcraft at 1900x1200 resolution and this card handles that resolution just fine with most of the eye candy turned on.
