Actually, another question. I notice they have Dell Aperture Grill Trinitron models for $40 more, Grade A. Could anyone comment on the differences between a shadow mask and an a. grill? Is it worth the extra $40 for the trinitron screen? I'm probably going to be using it for graphic design / image editing / video work.

Of course. Made absolutely no difference. Neither did turning it off for the night and turning it on in the morning (thought it might be an overheating issue).

Any other suggestions? Or comparisons between the Dell Trinitrons and the Hitachi Shadow Masks?

I think the 'trons are a little brighter and crisper, but they do have those scan wires, and since it's 21" there will be 2 of them going across the screen. If you can get used to them, I'd go Trinitron.

I'm used to them...my Viewsonic has 'em now. Are these Hitachis going to be noticeably worse than the viewsonic 19 -incher i'm using now?

Sent them an email a couple of days ago, haven't heard back from them yet.

Ok- I just set up the moniter. There was a bit of crap on the screen i had to scrape off, and the corners seem to "shimmy" a bit, but other than that it seems fine. oh ya- its big too =)

Arrrrr! My Hitachi that I ordered way back on page 4 (what a long lived thread) has recently developed the nasty habit throwing a shadow about a quarter inch to the right of things. Not all the time, but enough to bring me out of hiding and in search of a replacement. =(

OK, I took the bait. Homer! I hope we aren't being jerked around with these monitors. Just confirmed my ~$190 purchase of a refurb Grade A 21' Hitachi. Dang, was going to save that money to get creditors off my back. Oh well, I'll enjoy this monitor more ;)

Anyhow, what kind of special cables do I need to get this beast of a monitor working with my GeForce 4 Ti4600 card?

What do you guys think? Was this a wise investment? I am bit worried about spending this kind of money and not being able to return it if something arises without having to spend an arm and a leg.

Are you sure your cables are plugged in tightly? This happens to me when my cables come loose

Yup, the cables are secure with tightened thumb-screws. But I'll try messing with the cables next time the monitor gets uppity.

I noticed that someone actually posted something in this old thread again! Sorry I didn't respond sooner but I hadn't really been keeping up.

In general from what I have seen the biggest difference between the hitachi 811 and the hitachi 803 monitors is the exterior size, with the 803 having a bigger footprint on your desk. The 803 is a slightly older model, but the quality and controls seem to be almost identical. Actually the 803 was a better monitor than the 811 when new, having a higher max resolution.

The other big diffenece is that many of the 803's are badged as cornerstone or rasterops, but they still say hitachi on the back and are identical to those badged as hitachi.

The case on the 803 is a bit larger, (some might say HUGE) but the tube inside is virtually the the same as the 811, and it's cheaper than than the 811.

as stated on the website, this was a top of the line monitor when new. PCMall still lists it at $2839.99 and Ecost still lists it at $2382.34
(obviously these are not comparable current prices but it is nice to know what these monitors were worth at one time)

Just wanted to chip in my $.02....

I bought one of the 'B' grades. The case is slightly more yellow and dark than newer 'beige' computer parts nearby. The case is very clean. I though it looked new when I took it out of the box. There's just a few scratches on the right side. There's 3 parallel scratches (0.5-1 inch) in the surface of the glass. I hardly notice them. Power and video cable were both included.

There are 12(!) buttons for screen adjustment. Very easy to set up, and no crazy menus to dig through. The tube warms up very quickly. The screen is glare and static free, so the (low) curvature is hardly noticeable. The blacks are black and the whites are white. It's about 2 inches longer than my 17" monitor. It's quite heavy.

The only issue that I noticed is that at 1600x1200, there is a very faint shadow to the right of lines of black text on white background. It's only slightly darker than a 17 inch monitor that I bought NEW about a year ago. I rarely notice it unless looking for it.

It also doesn't seem to support 1440x1080. Not a major issue, but I'd like to have something between 1280x1024 and 1600x1200. There's a major difference in text and icon sizes between the two resolutions.

I'm very satisfied with this monitor. Shipping was fast and uber cheap; they must be eating $20 or more on each monitor. I mostly wanted it for gaming. If you're in graphic arts, I would go for the 'A' grade. Awesome price either way.

For those who see "shadows" on your screen:

Although I've not worked with these monitors, often times these "shadows" are caused by signals in inferior cables interfering with other signals within the cable. This can be fixed by purchasing a higher-quality cable (they can be found on eBay for $10-15 or in stores for $30-50). If these monitors have the coax inputs on the back then you might want to consider trying one of those types of cables (again, available on eBay for $10-15 or in stores for $30-50).

Good luck!!

Hi, I'm trying to get one of these monitors, but I can't seem to get the $7.99 shipping rate.

Can you please direct me on how I can get that rate?

Thank you.

Homer needs to update the original post. I was about to bite on this until I found out shipping was ~$30. Nothing pisses me off more then being jerked around on shipping, even though $30 is reasonable for a 70lb shipment.
