If you opt for the side by side, make sure you get one that is W I D E enough. The one I have is too narrow, and I hate it. It happened to come with the house when I bought it, so I wasn't going to get rid of it just because of that. I had always grown up with the over and under type, and that is what I would prefer, unless I could get a side by side that had sufficient width. I hate having to dig all the way to the back of the thing to get something that should fit at the front.

We have looked at the side-side's and with 5 of us the freezer and fridge wouldnt be big enough. our top freezer is always packed with stuff and after seriously visulizing what we would have to put in it i know there wouldnt be enough room in a side by side for the fridge or freezer.

I do have an upright kenmore 22Cf freezer. Right now it has half a cow sitting in it. much steak grilling this summer. :D

WE jsut bought one abut 4 months ago. Went with a side by side b/c our kitchen is a galley style and side by sides doors take up less room when they are open. Also, we have a fridge that can hold gallon jubs on door shelf... very handy.

Other things to consider. Size... I recommend at least 25 cubic feet. note, side by sides usually have less space than top or bottom freezer models.

Features: do you need lots of freezer storage? Do you want the little dispenser on the front? Do you want glass shelves.

Ignore the Energy Star ratings,..... they are all pretty damn efficient these days.

We bought a Fridgidaire Gallery side by side... what been very happy with it.

If you guys are buying multiple appliances you should expect at least 5% discount, free shipping, free removal of old appliances, and 0.0% financing. Shop around... prices vary quite a bit

I hope my response isn't too late. I was shopping for a refrigerator about 6 months ago, and I ended up with a top/bottom model because I was worried about how wide an item (like a pizza box) I could put into a side-by-side model. One friend suggested getting a top/bottom model but with the freezer on the bottom because the freezer is used less often.

Much easier..

Stainless Steel shows every little finger print... not good if you plan on having little ones...

if you have loads of space, get a large SBS.

else better to go with a top/bottom one, especially if you like 19" pizza's :p

also depends what you use more, if you use a fridge more then get a T/B with the fridge ontop, then most of it will be at eye level

Congrats Skoorbs! I didn't realize you guys were so close on the homeowner hunt. Of course it's been awhile since I've seen you guys on here (looks like we've all been visiting/posting less frequently the last couple months.) Hope you got a great place in a good neighborhood.

My personal vote is for a top and bottom model with the freezer on the bottom like someone else said. We have a side-by-side model that the previous owner left with the house. It's fairly nice, but the amount of useable freezer space you get absolutely SUCKS! We're actually looking around to pick up an old top/bottom model from a garage sale or friends/family to keep in the basement so we can have more freezer space, plus additional room to keep drinks.

OK we just bought a washer and dryer and a top/bottom fridge. The reason we went with top bottom is because well the bottom top are simply ludicrous in price. And then we compared this top bottom to an equal value SBS and instead of paying the $815 that we did (It's a 24 square foot maytag with ice maker) a similar SBS would have been $200 more. I agree they do look better but $200 just seems a lot to spend on something that looks better, is slightly less efficient (granted the difference may not be huge), and has a water dispenser.

Thanks for the input. I was personally set on a top bottom before because of the price (buying a house is so fvcking expensive) but mrsskoorb wanted a SBS and this thread helped me cause a bit ;)

We got what I think was a great deal on the whirlpool washer and dryer...

Yeah my posting is really inconsistent these days... In regards to house we're moving in on the 27th! House still isn't done but the builder buys from the same place we got our stuff today and the appliances (stove, etc.) are to be installed today. Hopefully the house will be done in time...

Side by side in the kitchen.

Top and bottom in the garage.

I don't really use the ice maker that much, so my next will probably be a t/b.

I have a freezer on top, fridge on bottom. It's useful for wide things. I noticed my parents have had trouble fitting wide things in their side-by-side.

Buy the biggest side by side that'll fit your space & buy the ice/water through the door.

You'll never regret it:D
