I texted the repairman that came yesterday, he is coming here after hours to give it a bit more freon. My freezer right now is at 40 degrees and I'm not sure I can save a lot of this food.

I'll go fridge shopping early next week. I don't trust this thing at all.

well. I called Whirlpool and politely got escalated by saying I thought of Whirlpool as a good brand, and appliance/big ticket items should last at least 10 years if treated well, even though mine was 3.5 years old, they should still back it up with something. Finally I got someone who said they could give me 40% off any full-priced fridge from their website, or 20% off one on sale. I took it obviously, said thanks, hung up. Well, when on their website, the selection was shite. I can only fit a 30" wide fridge. It has to be stainless steel. Besides a french door version that was close to 2K, they were all out of stock, with delivery estimated to be in over a month.

I ordered a new fridge from Best Buy. And unfortunately it's another Whirlpool. The GE fridges that size are all out of stock everywhere. Both repairmen said avoid the hell out of LG and Samsung fridges. This Whirlpool is a different model and does have good reviews. It will get here next Monday.

Dropped almost a G on it, $940 with tax and delivery. Fucking disposable appliance consumer culture is nuts.

A fridge in 1952 would cost you ~$3.3k adjusted for inflation. Maybe people need to adjust expectations.

yea, but it would still work, lots of power use, but long lasting.

so we should probably compare it to todays sub-zero. starts at about 12k.

Not sure of the OPs model number, but some need mainboard programming.

In that era 15% or more American households still didn't even have one, so it's not a fair comparison.

Compare it to a fridge from 1980 maybe. Probably at or so near 100% penetration into American households, so more established, a bit of time for improvements to happen, but before we became a totally disposable culture.

If we have been trained that $1,000 appliances, and all the resources they take to make, should only last 3 years or so, we are pretty doomed.

A 1989 fridge with an icemaker was $2.1k adjusted for inflation. So a $1k fridge is half price. $1k isn't really much money anymore. A good argument could be made for not making it at all if you can't make it right, but that doesn't seem to be the way the world works. Everyone wants to live like they're rich. If they can't really be rich, they buy the discount version of what rich people have with the attendant problems. Instead of a nice fridge they have to stress a bit over for money outlay, they buy a crappy fridge, a new cell phone, a bunch of new towels for the house(cause why not?!), a new tv(gotta have one in every room!), and a bunch of chintzy crap for the backyard party deck that /might/ outlast the season(good luck next year!).

My fridge is not full size because that's the size of my kitchen. It's a 30 inch wide top freezer that's 20 cubic feet with no ice maker, whereas full size french door fridges are over 1k and often closer to 2k and are closer to 30 cubic feet, and even if they aren't 30 cubic feet, they are much wider than 30 inches.

I don't want an ice maker, I don't want to think about dirty water lines ever. Filling up ice cube trays is not too much labor for me apparently. I don't want a tv screen on my fridge. I want literally no other features to complicate the act of freezing in one section, and refrigerating in another section. And for that, 1K is not chintzing out.

You have no fucking idea what you are talking about.
Fridges come in lots of sizes and styles. Are you this dumb?

As far as 20 cubic foot top freezer refrigerators that are stainless steel, and no wider than 30 inches, 1k is not on the cheaper range either.

And whirlpool is not a budget brand.

Again, if you think a 1k respectable brand 20 cubic foot 30 inch wide stainless steel fridge is ok to die in around 3 years, you are a fucking idiot and a reason why consumer disposable captialism is killing society and the planet.

Holy fucking dumb people.

You're pretty cocky for a little bitch that can't handle keeping a fridge going. You might want to check your attitude, ad implement a little self reflection.

Tell that to my bank account.

It isn't even just refrigerators. I rarely get much more than five years out of a lawnmower any more. I have two now that I can barely get started without a fight each time. New gas mowers are $3-500 while new batetry mowers are priced about the same. Thinking of going battery this time.

Back on appliances, why do chest freezers last for so many years? The one I bought nearly twenty years ago is running without flaw while I'm on my third refrigerator in the same time period.

Water comes from the same pipes. Literally. Fridge freezer lines are usually tapped off within a few feet of the sink water faucet.

Someone left my beer fridge freezer door cracked last week (probably kids looking for ice cream). It turns out that some of the meat/corn bags on the door thawed some.....along with a carton of ice cream. I think my wife thought the freezer wasn't cold enough, so she adjusted the dial to 1 from the recommended 3....then a bag of corn that thawed slid down and must have gotten jammed in the door. By the time I saw the condition of the freezer, the whole back wall was a solid block of ice and half of the food in it was thawed out (while the other half was covered in ice).

I really wish people would leave shit alone sometimes. I make mistakes, but I don't mess up stuff like that. I make sure doors are closed and I don't much with settings to remedy a door being left open.

My solution is that there's going to be a NO ICE CREAM EVER rule in the house.....and my beer fridge is off limits for storing anything other than beer or frozen alternator-sized bulk beef.

Except a sub-zero isn't a "good" fridge. It may cost $12k but you're not paying for longevity.

Ironically our fridge frosted up yesterday. Checked out the sensors and everything and am OK with calling it a fluke at this point but we'll see.

the fridge saga continues. The whirlpool fridge I ordered from Best Buy was the same height and width but one inch deeper, that got here this past Monday. The delivery guy came and checked with his measuring tape and said this fridge would not fit around the curve on the stairs going from the second to third floor because of that one inch. They didn't even try to bring it up.

I had to order a Frigidaire from another company as best buy had none of what I wanted in stock at the slightly smaller size. This fridge is even a tad bit smaller than the one I have now depth wise. same height and width. These guys came, doors off, and said it wouldn't fit. They tried. I don't think they tried long enough or well enough but that's just me. They said they were convinced the builder either had the railing on the stairs off, or had added this drop down to the ceiling in the stairwell after getting the fridge up here. I'm like appliances are one of the last things to come in on a reno or new build, but whatever. These guys took the damn fridge and left.

Well I know the developer that built this place, he was my buddy's client and I just sold him a new property to develop that closed literally last week. So I got in touch with him and spoke to him and then his contractor. They both remembered the same thing. Everything was finished in the building and the current fridge was brought in, doors off. That's it.

I'm going on close to 2 weeks with no workable fridge at this point. Freezer is ok. This is getting to be a 2nd world problem.

Edit: spoke to the customer service at the appliance store and explained what the developer and contractor told me, they are sending the fridge out again with what they call a High-end/Designer crew. Basically the Navy Seal team of appliance delivery people.

We had some really bad thunderstorms today. So it was totally understandable the Green Berets of appliance delivery were running late.

Except nobody called to say shit. My delivery window was 1:30-4:30. That came and went. I called and the automated system said 3:30-6:30. Fine. Told my date I might be late I'd give her a heads up.

630 passes. Can't speak to CS. They are closed. Nobody has called. Fuck it. Tell my date I'll be on time. I leave around 7. I'm in the Lincoln tunnel on the bus and of course these wackadoos call they are 5 min away.

Oh well.

This date better be good. If not I'd rather have had a fridge instead of another delay.

Couldn't reschedule the fridge delivery today because the delivery guys at the distributorship have yet to put the fridge back into stock.

On the bright side my date from last night is coming to stay over tomorrow night, and she wants me to use my crop on her. So good times.

The Green Berets of appliance delivery showed up today, and it's tight, but yeah it won't fit. I'm not sure what the developer and contractor are remembering, but it does not compute. There is no point in ordering a smaller fridge to fit up here, the old one has to go out. So contacted the property management company to temporarily remove the curved part of the railing on the curve of the stairs where the fridge gets stuck. It's wooden and curved and a little bit ornate, not sure I want to fuck with it.

I had another idea to get the fridge in so requested a third delivery attempt. Between me removing a small emergency light fixture and the guy thinking of how to angle it, the same exact fridge is in my unit, getting past the same exact curve in the stairs. Getting these 'designer' Green Berets crews scheduled is usually like a 4 business day out thing. And that time adds up.

3 weeks no working fridge. This is going to be a whole new world

Heh, usually top bottom (and even side to side) fridges are solid stable because they were an already established market.

I hear this type of stuff all the time with the french door gimmick now a days. Goodluck.
