Hey all, I've been doing a lot of research to try and answer my question, but I still need a little help.

I just bought an HP laptop with a 160GB X25-M G2 already installed, and I would like to do a repartition and clean install of Win7.

Main reason is because HP reserves a partition for recovery data on the drive, and since I've burned my recovery DVDs, I would like that 18.5GB back. It seems like a good idea to leave some of it as spare unpartitioned space. If I just do the repartition/format through the Windows Installation, will that get the job done? Or should I be doing a special format?

Also, I'm planning to update the firmware from 02HA to 02HD before doing any of this.

Thanks for the help!

Update the firmware, then do the Windows install, during the choose disk partition screen, delete your old partitions. Create a new partition and windows will want to create a recovery partition. After you click 'ok' It'll create two partitions. If you're not fine with that delete the 2nd partition then extend the 1st one to cover the entire disk. Have fun.

thanks razel, so I'll have my system partition, Windows will create a small partition, and I can leave another partition as spare area for the drive?

Whoa... the method I mentioned will delete all partitions. It's up to you what you'd like in the end really. If you want to keep the HP system partition and let Windows create an additional 100MB Recovery partition, during the install, just delete all other partitions. Then click next. Deleting the partition and letting Windows create the partition should automatically align it.
