why i hate hulu. as per you sig. more or less the content companies run hulu and they are thinking about making you have a cable subscription to watch anything on it
Well yeah. The traditional content companies are terrified about the reduced revenue potential of streaming options vs network advertising rates. They know that the digital age will partially undo their business model so they are doing everything they can to keep their traditional distribution systems duct taped together. Hence services like HBO Go, ESPN 3, and eventually Hulu needing a cable subscription to be useful.
That is why it is important to support services like Amazon and Netflix that are creating original content that is not tied to traditional business models and revenue expectations.
What they need is a single place to buy 100% of all movies from. Then choose your poison - Vudu, iTunes, Netflix, whatever. They've done it with music...iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc. you can either buy piecemeal or buy a streaming plan, but you have pretty much access to all music on whatever platform you choose to buy from for similar prices. Why not do that with movies?
That is exactly what they don't want you to have. What happened to the music industry (basically Steve Jobs forced them into a post-Napster future) is exactly what the movie and TV industry wants to avoid. They see what you want as a ominous warning to their industry.
It gave that central service (iTunes) too much control and leverage against them. That is why eventually the music industry were willing to offer DRM-free mp3s via Amazon eventually- they were desperate to get competition for iTunes. Video companies don't want to give up control to a Netflix or even something they work together on like Hulu.
They want to each have their own little walled garden where they each can charge the maximum the market will bear for their goods (or be arbitrarily tied to old high revenue distribution streams like cable) and fight tooth and nail to not become like the music industry has become.
That is why Hulu today has less good content than two years ago, and it might be even worse two years in the future. Over a very long time market forces will force them to play ball, but until then the only shortcut is shows like House of Cards.
