Redbox instant vs netflix streaming?

I just saw that Redbox streaming is $8/month and you get 4 DVD rentals each month. I'd assume those rentals are from kiosks.

So, it's actually cheaper than Netlfix and you can get things not on Netflix via DVDs.

And to be honest, after a few years of Netflix streaming, I'm sick of the content. Anyone on Redbox instant around here that can give some insight on what kind of streaming content they have?

Thanks!

My understanding is that the streaming selection is worse than Netflix or Amazon Prime, which at least get you get some decent original shows, like House of Cards.

Thanks.

I tried signing up just to browse the streaming stuff and their web site while not horrible is quite aggravating.

One of the reasons I upgraded to the new Roku 3 was to get Redbox Instant, although I've ended up using Vudu a lot more (also, Vudu supports UltraViolet codes - the ones that you get on the disc copy of a movie that lets you download it).

I feel you on the Netflix thing. The search is OK but not great...I sometimes spend more time looking for something to watch than watching it, and from reading articles online about it, it seems we're not alone.

why i hate hulu. as per you sig. more or less the content companies run hulu and they are thinking about making you have a cable subscription to watch anything on it

The opposite actually, I don't know why everyone complains about that - I always thought documentaries were boring, but I started watching them on Netflix & now I've watched a ton. There are some amazing documentaries out there, I had no idea! Although I've heard Indieflix has more...

Netflix streaming has so much content and is so cheap it's still the best deal out there by a pretty wide margin. There are all kinds of shows I've been able to catch up on that I didn't see when they first come out (Fringe, Following etc) as well as more current shows (Lost Girl, Sherlock etc). If I didn't watch so much sports, I could happily drop satellite and just get by on Netflix for a while.

I got mad at Hulu Plus when I was in the middle of a season and they dropped it. I then dropped Hulu when I went to watch a series and they didn't have the very first episode - but all the rest. Ridiculous.

What they need is a single place to buy 100% of all movies from. Then choose your poison - Vudu, iTunes, Netflix, whatever. They've done it with music...iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc. you can either buy piecemeal or buy a streaming plan, but you have pretty much access to all music on whatever platform you choose to buy from for similar prices. Why not do that with movies?

The frustration these days is that you can't rent a movie locally anymore - no more Blockbuster. You can rent a new movie from Redbox or buy a new movie from Walmart or Amazon, but if you want an older movie that isn't available on Netflix, good luck! No wonder people pirate movies...

Me to I have discovered some really interesting documentaries and independent films on Netflix just by browsing around the content.

I heard from some friends with Hulu Plus that they dropped it because the content has commercials. They where kind of like what is the point of paying for Hulu Plus and then having to watch commercials. I pointed out the same thing happens with cable. You pay for content and then have to watch commercials. However I have never seen commercials on Netflix.

Well yeah. The traditional content companies are terrified about the reduced revenue potential of streaming options vs network advertising rates. They know that the digital age will partially undo their business model so they are doing everything they can to keep their traditional distribution systems duct taped together. Hence services like HBO Go, ESPN 3, and eventually Hulu needing a cable subscription to be useful.

That is why it is important to support services like Amazon and Netflix that are creating original content that is not tied to traditional business models and revenue expectations.

That is exactly what they don't want you to have. What happened to the music industry (basically Steve Jobs forced them into a post-Napster future) is exactly what the movie and TV industry wants to avoid. They see what you want as a ominous warning to their industry.

It gave that central service (iTunes) too much control and leverage against them. That is why eventually the music industry were willing to offer DRM-free mp3s via Amazon eventually- they were desperate to get competition for iTunes. Video companies don't want to give up control to a Netflix or even something they work together on like Hulu.

They want to each have their own little walled garden where they each can charge the maximum the market will bear for their goods (or be arbitrarily tied to old high revenue distribution streams like cable) and fight tooth and nail to not become like the music industry has become.

That is why Hulu today has less good content than two years ago, and it might be even worse two years in the future. Over a very long time market forces will force them to play ball, but until then the only shortcut is shows like House of Cards.

i say go with the provider with the content you enjoy. i'm currently using netflix. They have good stuff and a lot of duds also. Amazon has mostly duds. hulu is good for shows. don't use it but crunchyroll is for anime.

If you have a Roku, you can browse through Redbox Instant selection without starting trial membership.

It was awful when I browsed through it a few months ago (known titles were also on Netflix or Amazon, and then lots of totally unknown stuff).

I'll be glad when Netflix buys all these other companies.

Netflix doesn't own the content. If it acquired one of these other services, the media companies would just set up another (they set up Hulu) to keep Netflix from getting too powerful. The first time the contract comes up for renewal they would refuse to re-license the product under the service Netflix bought so Netflix would be back to square one.

The only way Netflix can win is if one day people demand their content in the same way HBO content is currently demanded. Then they don't need the media companies to play ball.

In five years there will be two streaming services. Between them they will have every movie and tv show ever made.

And we won't even remember a time when there were multiple streaming sources, each with some stuff, and a bunch of stuff not on anywhere.

Universal access to every movie and tv show ever made. And kids will just accept that as the norm and not even understand why it wasn't that way when there parents were growing up.

either that or every network will have their own streaming service with their own shows and you add the a la cart. similar to some of the game digital distribution sites. didn't disney just release a new streaming service? i wonder if it'll have exclusivity to disney movies? I think netflix has some of the older stuff. also i think the disney service is for buying movies. netflix you're basically paying for access to movies that can disappear at any time.
