Wouldn't it suck if we gave the red staters their actual electoral votes... The east bay by itself would trump the whole middle of america I bet! And they call us marginalized hehe

why the heck are you bashing certain parts of America? your proud of bums hanging out in streets in your city? huh?

The bums are usually refugees cast out from the burbs.
A twisted guilt-fear ridden society tends to do that to people.
I know of quite a few "bums" living their life and traveling doing their thing.
If one wants to be free then so be it.
The panhandlers are either crazy and need a place to get better (thanks raygun)
or have serious drug issues. (and need a place to get better)

If your not contributing to society and just doing the dumbass commute day after day coming home to tv
and then bed in your isolated suburb you could be considerd a bum also.

A tv watching, car driving to dumbass office job, life wasting dittohead in the burbs
could be considered a bum also. (Some people cal lit success here though)
Your ignorance of reality is painful to read. *shakes his head* Another teenager who thinks he has it all figured out.

Ok kid when you get some life experience bring it ok?
(possibly a decade older then you but then this once again shows the shoddyness of statements from the right here without a shred of investigation into reality.)

Been across the US 3 times in car or bus, hitchhiked across it E to W twice.
Lived on my own for almost 15 years this year.
And former active duty servicemember of USAF 4 years honorable discharged after I did my time.
I have lived in about ohhhhh.....hmmmm.....7 states now. (not drove through but had a lease)
I worked my ASS off to move here to SF in 96 and work damn hard to earn the right to be a citizen of one of the only free places to live in USA left.
Oh yeah and I am almost 30 in a few weeks and I have seen a LOT in my time.
I lived on the edge for almost 10 years in music industry and touring etc. and came through pretty damn well I must say.
I still am active I go to protests write a bit on the web and still keep my hands in the music scene here.
You can believe that everyone HAS to sell out when they are 25 but it is a choice.
Those who sell out to the stereotypes of being old = conservative time and time have shown me it is clear these people have already grown old in their heart and take the easy way out. Period.
What have you done?

We promise not to make you gay or something
(And everyone knows the hottest women hang out where the gay guys are anyhow.)
oops I wasen't suppossed to tell the red-staters that! :p

Shh, you're going to ruin it for the rest of us that live around there :D

All I got to say is that I enjoy living in Santa Rosa (North Bay for those of you who don't know) when school's out a hell of a lot more than I enjoy living in Ames Iowa when school is in session. But that's my personal preference, obviously SOME people disagree. Good for them, they can live in Iowa, I'll live in Cali.

But why does this need to degenerate into "the hard workers of middle America are the backbone of this nation"? I mean you got me picturing some smarmy commerical with a tired, hardworking farmer leaning against his tractor, taking a break while saluting the American flag while a voice-over sings "God Bless America" ;) Let's not go crazy here.

Besides, whatever us crazy Cali people are doing when middle Americans are working hard, we've still managed to supply about 15% of the US GDP. Presumably those gay nightclubs are very lucrative :D

Look people: faith in God and making Jesus lord of your life is good for you psychologically. If you've got faith then you don't need psychologists to help you exercise your personal demons.

To fairly judge the number of ?nuts? you should add each pastor/priest as a psychologist as well.

Whatever works for each person, I always say. Personally, I've never been more at peace with myself since I've given up religion (in any organized and concrete way at least). I do like your last suggestion though. And like I said, if it works for others, I'm all for it!

Do the psychologists count that help the victims of the priest/pastors?

Are you even capable of making a post without trying to push your religion on everyone? Ridiculous.

With the bolded modifications, LMK's post is much better ;)

Like I said, if it works for you, that's fine. But it's not a miracle cure for whatever ails you...some of us would rather avoid it.

Personally, what I believe in and don't believe in isn't determined by what'll make me feel better about myself, the world, or anything else...

I agree with you, and I used to expect others to behave the same way. But I've realize that many people embrace religion just to make themselves feel better. It "touches" them because it takes away a lot of their insecurities about life and death. Whether or not I think that's a silly reason to believe in something, you can't deny the good it does for a lot of people to have SOMETHING to believe in...

You're full of sh!t you know that? I'm originally from the Burbs in the Bay Area, San Jose and Los Gatos to be exact. Oakland isn't the Burbs, it's a run down cities due to the Port of Oakland losing most of it's business. Wankers like you think you are so original or enlightened, you are neither. Compared to the real Bohemians that use to reside in "Frisco" you idiots are nothing but a bunch of posers. Hell you hAven't even your own style, you just copy those who came before you a generation earlier. You'd make Jello Biafra puke with disgust.

I would argue that a higher concentration of psychologists has little to do with actual rates of mental illness - I would wager it has to do more with a population's willingness to seek the services of a mental health professional rather than seek placebos like religion or simply just ignoring problems.

Of course, that's just a knee-jerk response to the article. I think the truth is more complex than that.

I think blue states are enlightened enough to treat their nuts. Red states are backwards enough to elect theirs. That is why the District of Columbia is in the top ten.

And where are you? Not around here anymore I see. What would you know on the east coast about what is going on out here.

Not a damn thing... people were soooo much cooler people when you were in CA, right?
SJ is a suburb too you obviously know crap about the east bay. For anyone thinking he is so smart about San Francisco, Los Gatos and SJ he mentioned is an 2 hour trainride and 2 area codes away from the city.
Don't give me that crap about how cool you were back in the day. You don't live IN it nor did you.
you come deal with it and live here then talk that sh1t.
There is a LOT more to oakland then the docks, but you didn't live up here so you wouldn't know.
uh-huh and Jello moved out to Mass. with you huh? Nope he is here as I am....
....while you sit talking sh1t across the country

Yeah I'm in Boston but it's only been a year and a half. I lived and worked in the Bay Area for over 30 years.

people were soooo much cooler people when you were in CA, right?
Cooler than you but that's not saying much
SJ is a suburb too you obviously know sh1t about the 510, what would you know about it?
I've worked in Frisco (The Mission District and Hunters Point to name two places), Oakland, Fremont, Newark, Saulsalito, etc so I think I know a thing or two about the 510 area.
There is a LOT ,ore to Oakland then the docks but you didn't live up here so you wouldn't know.
I know enough to understand that unless you live in the Rich Neighborhoods that place is a sh!thole

OK let me rephrase my earlier statement, the Jello Biafra before he sold out would have puked. People like you are nothing more than Rebels without a clue, a bunch of wannabes reveling in the accomplishments of those who proceeded you.

Holy crap. Obviously I have not been to Oakland.
What's this business about the Port losing all it's business???
What about the reports there is a massive labor shortage and the Container ships have been stacked deep out at sea because of it?
You mean exporting U.S. Goods Busineses right? Because we are importing a sh!tload of stuff.
