This game is sooo punishing... I want to like it. I'd probably absolutely love this game if I was 15 again and had countless hours to invest into learning all the intricate details. Instead, I'm stuck knowning absolutely nothing about the game and getting drilled everytime I try to look around and survey the surroundings.

I have limited time to play, and TF2 is just so damn pick up n' play friendly that I can't see myself sticking it out much longer in RO2. Oh well, the Heavy promo hat for TF2 is pretty nifty. :)

Just like any game once you learn the chokepoints it gets a lot easier.

I've been getting 80+ kills on most maps with an SMG. People who play the game "SIM" style are so pissed when you bum rush them and get into their spawn buildings. Tell you to stop hacking and that no one would do that in real life. I just laugh and keep spraying and praying.

Lulz. I actually just got an 11 kill streak, flanked around half the map and just camped out in one spot, the waves just kept coming and nobody saw me. :) The game is definitely great, yeah I just need to learn the maps I guess.

It's without a doubt the biggest key to not getting capped from who knows where constantly. Until you know the maps, watch where people go and don't die. Let someone else run out into an opening first. Use cover until you know what places are usually safe at that point of a match. Bait everyone.

Edit: Also, yesterday I witnessed someone literally flying around on a mounted MG killing everyone. I'm not sure if I hope it's a bug or a hack. lol

THIS...I have about 9-10 hours in on the game and have finally settled down into kind of understanding the flow of the maps and the modes.

I started off trying to follow peeps that appeared to be highly ranked to see where they were going...and it had positive effects.

The manual bolting was a nice suprise...it took a bit of getting used to...I would shoot and then forget to reload...

A couple of times I would have the perfect kill...and click...only to watch the reload process and the guy to run off

I haven't paid too much attention to the upgrades...I did get a pee-shooter scope on a semi auto rifle that was god awful to try to aim through...

It's nice to see Tripwire consistently releasing updates/patches to fix bugs.

They have really done a great job supporting this game.

Bump to a great game

I'm sure a lot already know this, but I didn't see it posted in this thread. AMD released 11.9 drivers last Wednesday that are supposed to increase RO2 crossfire performance. Just downloaded. Has anyone given them a shot yet?

I am kind of with you...I played for about 10 hours...and then dropped it...

I came back and was getting my ass handed to me pretty hard again.

Anyone have any tips on how to approach each map? half the time I get smoked from a far distance by people just WAITING for you to poke your head out...

Also...how is it that on some maps like the grain map that I can get a semi auto rifle with a scope...but the same rifle it seems on a different map doesn't have the scope option...

Thanks for the noobish...

I'm treating this like when I played CS:S. In CS:S, I played Office as a CT and got to know the map, the angles, bad spots, very bad spots, etc. I became a game changing CT, grab hostages while Ts rushed garage to side hall to front to garage, next round all 16 Ts camp the hostages.

While it's harder for staying on one map, you can always choose be a German or Russian on any map you're on. Get to know it, in Spartanovka (Gully, Church, House rows) I play as a German I'm always on the left side of the map, I really don't know the right side map. So I'm getting to know where the Russians like to be at. There is a 24/7 Apartment server but empty at times and other times gets filled up.

Another thing that can help is not to be in one spot too long, you kill someone, they'll more than likely seek you out again. If this means moving from the edge of a trench to other edge, so be it. You can also consider putting yourself to the edge of the map, at least you'll only have to worry about certain directions.

When running in the open, zig-zag, I don't think I've gotten hit yet by zig-zagging at someone shooting me greater than 50m out.

As far as weapons go, I'd call it a bug, yesterday I went from Level 60'ish to 99 :/ Hero status now but all due to a bug, though I think I did 1-60'ish on my own. For me I like the game, though the bugs irk me too. 68 hours in and 40 in the last two weeks. :/ CS:S I hit 80h in two weeks... yes, I have a full time job too...

People that stopped playing probably stopped following this thread, too.
Maybe you'll pick it back up in the future, after you hear about how great it got after patching, and all of the free mods it has.

New patch out right now.

Everyone,

The previously mentioned RO2 update is in Valve's hands and will be released soon. The stats reset will take place sometime tomorrow morning/afternoon time. The changelog is below:

Stats
-Fixed stats and acheivements being awarded when they shouldn't have been and sometimes not saving stats on ranked servers. This requires a global stat and achievement reset which will be happening soon.
-Fixed several number display issues in the profile menu and after action report
-Honor, class, and weapon experience are all currently doubled to help make up for stats lost to the reset
-A new achievement has been added which is unlocked simply by playing RO2 during the double xp for players affected by the stat reset

Gameplay
-Reloading can be interrupted by melee or switching weapons
-Fixed quick grenade not returning to the previously equipped weapon
-Fixed team wounding counting as kill
-Fixed kill assists not showing up all the time
-Fixed Countdown Time to Beat being always 0
-Fixed timers showing wrong numbers in the single player campaign
-Fixed tank AI being able to see through smoke
-Fixed tank cannon smoke shells not blocking any AI vision

Stability & Performance
- Major optimization pass on all maps should increase performance across the board
- Reduced Alt-Tab crashing
- Fixed post-processing preset resetting itself in the video settings menu
- Fixed glowing outline/rainbow colors around the screen for certain machines
- Fixed a bug causing all audio to cut out after a map change
- Graphical improvements to environments, weapons and vehicle interior - areas or vehicles/weapons not in direct sunlight now have working specularity which will help make normal maps more visible and textures to look less flat
- New Umbra release and optimization
- General CPU optimizations

Server
-Fix for commandline setting of webadmin values not saving after multiple map changes

It's still a bit of a mess, and yes I have stopped playing :\

It should be good to go in six months or so I'd guess, if TWI keeps fixing stuff.

Or whenever the mods come out to make it play like RO1 :awe:

I was in a server last night that apparently was on CD-Station for a long time and everyone was getting annoyed with the map. After the server switched sides again, a ton of people agreed to suicide with grenades. At least 25 people died. Maybe 3 people made it out of spawn. Hahaha

Is it just me, or is this game already dead? I can't find any servers with more than 5 people on it and less than 150 ping. I've been popping my head into the game to see if I could find a decently populated server maybe once a week for the past month or so and have yet to find anything. Finally just joined a 150 ping server the other night, and good god it was horrible. Not sure if it was just the server, but the lag was atrocious.

Ugh.

Unfortunately, yes... the game is nearly dead. Last time I checked though, there is at least one (1) server that is nearly full all the time, with a dedicated community. It's a realism server so it's a bit tough. But there's still a dedicated group of people who play on it though. I'll have to check it again when I get on tonight.

Yeah, I mean, there's a few servers that show up with 20-30+ people in them, however they all have pings in excess of 150ms from here in Seattle. It's a damn shame too. The game has a few bugs and weird things here and there, but it's still fun to play. Now it's not even playable for me considering there aren't any lag free populated servers.

I did play at the beginning...but stopped quickly after release...about the time BF3 beta came out...

I was thinking about going back to see how it was after the layoff...guess it went into the tank from the sounds of your post...

Yeah I did the same thing. The BF3 beta came out, so I figured I'd just RO2 some time to get sorted out. Then BF3 came out, so I've been playing that primarily since. From what I've seen, the game has collapsed since then. I've checked for servers maybe once a week or something and never see a server with an acceptable ping with enough players.

What a waste of money. I guess we can only hope for good mods now to get our money's worth. I can't see how the player base is going to increase when many people literally can't find a server to play on.

Well, technically-speaking, the game right now is leaps and bounds better than it was on release. It's been patched up to it's neck. The server browser works as it should, my shots actually hit where I aim them, the graphics are lovely, and it runs buttery-smooth on my computer now thanks to some optimization.

The game died very quickly for a couple reasons. For one, everyone had a sour taste in their mouth because it had such a rough release (I know I did). Although it was delayed two weeks, the beta was extremely buggy. On release-day, it was still extremely buggy. Some issues were fixed, but at the same time, new issues were introduced. They had to reset the entire stats system, and force everyone to start over, which I imagine people weren't happy about.

RO2 really needed needed an extra month or two of work. They didn't delay it any further though, and for good reason: Battlefield 3 releasing only a month later. So they had two options; A) release a more polished game in October and attempt to compete with Battlefield 3, or B) release the game much earlier in a buggier state, but while ensuring more sales.

In fact Battlefield 3 is probably the other reason why RO2 is so dead now.

I'm not sure if they ever fixed the balance issues, or will even bother to. There was a stigma going around that Tripwire has a massive hard-on for the Germans, which is why their weapons were totally overpowered compared to the Russians. Yes, I understand that they're trying to be "realistic"; but it really needs to be balanced for the sake of being balanced. When I play RO2 with my friends, we always go Allies, and we always end up being really goddamned frustrated because Allies have the inferior weapons, and end up getting slaughtered more often than not.

It doesn't help that some of the maps are unfairly balanced against Allies as well. Comissar's House is the best example I can think of. Basically, the beginning of the map consists of a big, white field that Allies have to run across while the Axis take pot shots at them from three different buildings. It's kind of retarded.

Then the Tripwire fanboys always have to refute this notion with some lame excuse, saying "No, of course the game is balanced. More skilled players usually go Axis for some reason, that's all." Or "Allies are being played by kids who aren't good at the game, because they're still in gradeschool and they think Hitler is evil or whatever, and they end up losing."

Yeah... it's all just kind of a clusterfuck. I'm glad there are at least a few people still playing it. I don't plan on abandoning the game just yet.
