Recommendations for a good, recent, 4X strategy game?

Galactic Civilizations III is quite good, as is Pandora: First Contact.

Some put Sins of a Solar Empire into the 4X category, I myself do even though it is real time strategy.

GC3 is just in alpha/beta right now right?

The other options are Endless Space and Horizon. I was talked into Sins for my 4x needs but I didn't enjoy it much. Now I'm just waiting for the release of GC3.

Endless Legends (Metacritic) has really surprised me. I haven't gotten very deep into it (maybe 5 hours gametime), but it's exceedingly beautiful, UI is excellent, and seems to have a huge amount of depth. I got it from GMG for 25% off with the code going around.

I don't have a recommendation:

But...

Distant Worlds: Universe - Avoid this 4x game. Because the game is too large to micro manage, and the AI does a craptastic job with anything called strategy. I played for maybe 30 hours before giving up in frustration. Some people swear by this title, but understand, the strategy is broken. If you automate your fleets. They randomly ping pong against enemy colonies while leaving your empire undefended and just suicide themselves over and over again. There is nothing you can do to prevent it with any automation.

You need to set your Fleet Postures, and possibly make a few Policy adjustments.

Distant Worlds : Universe is one of the best 4x's out there right now.
It's not perfect, but no game is.

Age of Wonders III is quite good, surprised no one has mentioned it yet.

I was going to but it's still 3 places from the top of my "to be played" list so can't say if it's good or not.

Another one is Elemental: Fallen Enchantress (and standalone exp Legendary Heroes) which is a good game if you are fond of Civ & Heroes of Might & Magic.

Sword of the Stars is Great, SWOTS 2 even with patches is still lacking, not up to par with SWOTS 1 IMHO.

I liked SotS a good amount. Endless Space does it better in my opinion though although it's a bit of a trade better strategy map for worse combat. I never played SotS 2, but from what I heard of how bad it was, it seemed very unlikely it would ever recover.

I liked Endless Space. Endless Legend? I'm not sure about it. I've played it for a couple of hours and I have mixed feelings. My friend absolutely loves it though.

which is the one where you fight fight fight and then the pirates come and majorly kick you in the butt to oblivion? Distant Worlds or Endless Space? i'd stay away from the one with the pirates.

and Fallen Enchantress is god awful! Age of Wonders 3 is far superior. i enjoyed every minute of it.

Just because there's lots of TBS 4x doesn't mean it's a requirement of the genre. There's plenty of old and new examples of RTS/pause ones some bad some decent/good and such.

I'm not really sure Sins in particular truly qualifies. It has everything there in name, but it really plays way more like a traditional RTS than other 4x games.

That was my point. The other guy seemed to be claiming 4x/TBS/RTS are all separate :|

I'd just like a new grand scale railroad strategy game. Still install Rails across America every now and then.

Started Endless Legend yesterday and did the tutorial. This game is very impressive so far. I love the theme and how they tied everything together. Love the different options for your empire.

Looks like a blend between Civ5 and Age of Wonders 3 mixed with a bit of the unit customization of Legendary Heroes (which I also really like).

Great buy!

Is Endless Legend the sequel to Endless Space or are the names unrelated?
