Okay so I've never really gotten into the metal scene and don't know much about any artists. All I know is I really like Avenged Sevenfold and crazier type rock like AC/DC. Not a fan of music like Black Sabbath. So what else might I like?

Aluminum, stainless steel, iron, copper, bronze ... someone might have a few more to add to the list. Depends on what you want to make ...

Metal is a pretty general classification but here is some stuff that I like.

Saxon
Queensryche
Amon Amarth
Nightwish

As far as Black Sabbath goes, Dio years are the best imo.

I signed up for that a bit ago and started scrobbling everything I listened to in Winamp. After a week I started getting recommendations but so many of them are totally far off from the kind of stuff I'm listening to. Not sure how to refine it really.

AC/DC isn't really metal, but rather hard rock. You might enjoy Rose Tattoo, Angry Anderson's angry vocals + Peter Wells on the slide guitar = Look for their early stuff ;)

Saxon - The Inner Sanctum is a recent (last Year) classic Metal album from a classic Metal Band I like quite a bit.

Angra, Kamelot, Nightwish, Dream Theatre, and Sevendust are all great. Dragonforce and Rhapsody if you like Power Metal.

To be honest, though, it's a little bit hard to differentiate non-growling/screaming metal from hard rock.

Thanks folks, lots of great suggestions here. As Aflac pointed out, it's hard to differentiate "tamer" metal from hard rock, so that's why I was mentioning AC/DC as a type I like (plus I did classify them as "crazier type rock" ;)).
