Recommend me a good 19" CRT monitor.

I just bought the 997DF. Still waiting for it to arrive.

I just couldn't justify an LCD for 2X the price right now.

Thanks for replies. I've already considered getting another LCD, but I already spent $500 two years ago, for the one I have already. I want another monitor mostly for gaming in 19". So I'm sticking with a CRT this time around. Deskspace is not a problem.

So so far I'll be looking at VS P models. The Samsung 997DF seems like a good monitor too. The IBM looks overpriced comparing its specs to the other monitors I listed. How about the NEC FE992?

I have both the Viewsonic P95f 19" and tghe NEC FP2141 22" monitors. Both are excellent, especially for gaming. Many Samsung monitors have a curved tube with a flat piece of glass in front of it. I would avoid these.

CRTs may be good for gaming (no ghosting) but keep in mind that they do run your electric bill higher, emit more heat so makes your room hotter, takes up more space, and just doesn't look as "cool." I would sacrifice for all the benefits of an LCD.

I don't want to turn this into a CRT vs LCD thread. I'm looking for a CRT. My purposes will be for gaming and movies. I already own an LCD and for 2d apps it looks great for that.

I found the Viewsonic here: $189.00 VIEWSONIC P95F+B

This model appears to be an aperture grill, which means it has two small thin lines running across the screen. Not a big deal since my purpose is for gaming and movies, so I probably will not see them.

How about the NEC FE992? I've heard that they are good monitors and OTOH I've also heard they have quality issues. More specifically that they flicker after less than a year of service.

Yep you're right, the NEC FE992 has worse specs than the samsung. The viewsonic P95F+B is over my budget brand new. I'd have to settle for a refurb to get underbudget. I think I'm just going to get the Samsung.

Edit:

I also couldnt find the NEC FE991. This item is discontinued and availabiltiy is scarce, not to mention expensive. Which makes the only practical options, the Viewsonic or the Samsung. The Samsung having better specs, on paper looks to be the better choice. I'll try to update this thread again to post my experience with the Samsung.

Ok its been about two weeks that Ive had the Samsung 997DF. I am pleased to say that it is indeed a good monitor. I am playing games at 16X12 and it looks great. For text it pales in comparison to my LCD, but no surprise there really. This screen is perfect flat and with a little patience, I was able to get the geometry to near perfect. I picked this monitor up at my local fry's b&m for about $200 after tax. The Samsung was cheaper than both the NEC and Viewsonic. The Samsung also has better specs than either of its competitors. For anyone in the market for a new 19" CRT, I highly recommend this monitor.

The screen is not perfect flat. Check the corners. They put a flat glass in front of the curve glass to give the illusion of being flat.

Well it isnt "perfect flat". I should rephrase my last post. It has a very slight curve and it is very hard to see. The so called perfect flat's such as the Viewsonics have geometry problems, and I think Samsung did a nice job with the trade-off. In any case the Samsung has a .20mm dot pitch, which is better than any of it's current direct competitors.

Buy a better LCD.

F**K no, I'm not buying any. ATM, I have 19'crt and lovin' it. LCD are the next worse invention since laserdisc, I hope it dies a groaning roar. Why like laserdisc? It's expensive and it's no better then a flat screen tv. Why not get a flat screen tv and watch movies on it? LCD to replace CRT, what a joke.
All I need to do is convince others that LCD is not what they think it is. It is inferior to CRT in terms of picture quality and gaming.
CRT needs another evolution, how about less component, lighter, use less electricity and more digital component all integrated?
Sorry, I am thinking of 21' CRT not 17' lcd for the same price.

I'm a little late on the response, but go with the samsung. I just bought it and i'm pretty pleased. For the price it's a pretty good deal. Originally I had wanted the viewsonic but when it came down to me saving money, Samsung was great.

Not bad for 40 lbs but I'd prefer 21'
The bigger, the more fun to watch movies and play games on it. Why is everyone so crazy about LCD, it's overhyped and they are shoving it down into our throats.
It's not what we want to buy it's what they want to sell because its mass producing is much cheaper then CRT component.
One monitor can built about 3 LCD and sell for as many times as 200-300 percent.
What an incredible investment!

I see you fell for Samsung's .20mm dot pitch scam. Yes it has .20mm dot pitch. But that's only for horizontal. Most manufacturers list diagonal dot pitch and not horizonal. Samsung is one of the few companies that list only horizontal dot pitch. The diagonal dot pitch on that Samsung is not .20mm. It's more like anywhere from 23 1/2 to 25mm.

I'm not saying your monitor is bad by any means. It's just that you get what you pay for.
