Escort GT
Focus ZX3
Ford Contour - Car and Drivers 10-best winner 2yrs '95 & '96
Nissan 240SX

1989 K car with 275,000 miles, non working windows, urine stained seats, warped rotors, oil leak, no heat and an am radio permanently stuck on a local fanatic evangelist radio station at full blast.

That would be under 5K and probably a pretty sweet ride.

If you're looking for practical, might want to look at an older Mazda Protege, but I can definitely vouch that the Miata is nice.

really...

If you can't fit in a Corolla you can't fit in a Miata.

For < $8k I don't really think "fun to drive" is much of an option if you don't fit well into small cars. There are the pony cars, as mentioned before.

Of course, I think my '95 Geo Prizm is fun to drive. It's more about your driving than the car, I think. :D

Edit: A '99 accord qualifies as fun to drive? So...yeah, get a Honda of some sort. I've always been impressed with their legroom.
