Yes, that is completely false. (Taps sarcasm meter)

Whiskey will not go bad after opening, it should last well over a year. Make sure to store bottles upright, the cork shouldn't be in contact with the whiskey.

The only whiskey I usually drink is single malt scotch, with my bang for your buck choice being Talisker 10 yr for around $55.

For something really cheap, Jameson isn't bad for around $20. It's Irish whiskey so it's distilled thrice instead of twice, often making it smoother, but less characteristic. This is obviously a steep generalization.

mmmmmmmm, I love Talisker 10. Oddly enough, and please dont kill for me for this, I find Talisker plain wonderful with 2 ice cubes. Most scotches I drink neat or with a little water but for some reason Talisker comes alive to me with the ice. It brings the smoke into perfect balance for my palate. Other, smokey malts like Lagavulin (sp?) and Bowmore I like neat or with a little water but Talisker with no more than 2 cubes... heaven...

To each his own, I'm not a fan of snobbery.

I sometimes add a splash of water myself. Compared to the Laphroiag 10yr Cask Strengh I have, I don't even feel the Talisker 10yr is smokey at all. My buddy swears by the Laphroiag 15, supposedly the smokiness is a lot more mellow allowing for a lot of otherwise hidden qualities to shine.

I have added something different to my collection recently, Yamazaki Japanese single-malt whiskey, can't wait to try this one.

What? Never heard that one before. I'm sure the taste will change somewhat over time due to evaporation but it certainly does not go bad. Heck, I have an 8 year old screw top (I'm told screw top does not create as good of a seal as cork but I can't back that up) bottle of Jamison that still tastes great. I'm sure if I compared it to a brand new bottle the taste would be different but who knows if that was mainly due to age or just the different batches that are known to have slight variation in flavor.

You have to admit you did that fairly well though. Deadpan delivery FTW. How long did it take for you to work up to 750ml per night anyway. Back when I was drinking too much for a short while I could tell my tolerance was going up over time.

Hell, I don't know how long it took. I certainly don't remember setting a goal of "I want to be able to put away a fifth of whiskey every night by July 17, 1986." I didn't have to stop with a small bottle...On several occasions, I put away a half-gallon (1.75 l.) by myself...but not too often when I had to work the next day.
Sometimes I'm amazed that I didn't kill myself drinking.
(and don't get me started on Everclear...that shit almost did kill me)

Wow. Do you consider yourself an alcoholic? Can you still drink with moderation now?

Sorry, I recently went on a Scotch and Irish whisky (whiskey when it's Irish) buying spree and got all paranoid the other day about it going bad. I can't stand to leave them unopened (I have to taste them all) so now I have a total of 20 (including my bourbon and Canadian collection) opened bottles of whiskey in the bar.

Me? An alcoholic? Fuck no...I'm just a drunk. Alcoholics go to meetings.

Yes, I can drink a beer or two, a mixed drink or three...and not touch the stuff again for months.
I don't think I've had a beer since last summer, nor a mixed drink since we went to Maui in 2007. (and I have a well stocked liquor cabinet...full of partially opened bottles of several different whiskies, rums, vodka, and I'm not sure what else...Bailey's, ???)

You're not technically an alcoholic when you've moved on to rocket fuel.

But if it's alcohol-based rocket fuel...it still counts, right?

http://www.drinksmixer.com/drink6398.html

"Rocket Fuel #3 recipe

Serve in Shot Glass

1/2 shot Bacardi® 151 rum
1/4 shot vodka
1/4 shot Blue Curacao liqueur

Pour ingredients, in order, into a shot glass. Serve."

A fifth a night! I can put away a fifth quite quickly myself, less than 1 hour. But I ain't going to be going to no work the next day I can tell you that. In fact I'll be feeling that for 2 days or more.

Depends how big you are. tolerance etc. I have some poker buddies that have no problem with a fifth of whiskey. I like it like that too about 11 o clock they start playing stupid and Z goes home serveral hundred/thousand dollars richer. Only once this year and we play every Friday night I didn't finish in top 2 out of 16.

I really can't drink that much like you I get hung over for 2 days with even half a fifth so I pretty much have to monitor it or I'm worthless next couple days.

Hell, that's their fault for trying to play poker while they're drunk...I don't blame you in the slightest for taking advantage of them...I'd do it too. I do know how to make a single drink last all night when I need to...

Shamelessly stolen:

Does whiskey go bad?

Sadly, yes it does, all too often.

You must all understand that it starts life emerging from the still bright and clear, poured into a big mellow barrel and put into a nice warm warehouse, surrounded by kindred spirits. It is happy there. It feels safe. It expects to be there long enough to mature into a refined whiskey, one taken neat.

But instead, usually at the insistence of some greedy corporate weenie, at the tender age of two or three it's abrubtly poured from the barrel into a cold, hard square bottle, shipped out to find itself looking at the shins of those selecting something from the top shelf. And Trust Me - The very rare upskirt glance is *not* worth the horrors of sitting on the bottom shelf where you may be targeted for harassment by horny MD 20~20 pints and passing cats.

Is it any wonder that it goes bad? That it starts to hang out with an unsavory crowd (mixto tequilas... berry-flavored vodkas... rootbeer schnapps...)? That it gets mixed up with the likes of diet Pepsi and cherry Coke? That it comes to some ignominious end, like poured over cloudy ice cubes into a dirty glass at some seedy biker bar?

I know what you're thinking: This is terrible! What can I do to help?

Rescue some!! Buy a barrel:

http://www.thebarrelmill.com/index.php/whiskey-barrels/5-gallon-whiskey-barrel.html

equip it with one of these:

http://thebarrelmill.com/infusion-spirals.html

and fill it up. Put it in a good spot, perhaps next to your bed.

Talk to it. Make sure it knows it's in a good home, a safe place. Above all let it know that it no longer needs to be afraid.

(you might want to make sure there's no one else around while you're doing this)

Give it a couple of years...enough time to heal.

Then tap the barrel and pour some into a nice crystal decanter. Make it feel Special.

You'll be rewarded not just by the pleasure associated with sipping a smooth, mellow, fully self-actualized whiskey, but also by the knowledge that you've saved a whiskey from going bad.
