well, it is only Reason #534957296.
You are from Texas so your opinion about Ca is more than suspect. IMO the only thing that sucks about Ca is the price of gas.

It's penny wise and pound foolish to not offer mental health services.

only if the benefits outweigh the costs. and who knows. you can tell the immediate cost in terms of revenue. can you tell the benefits? can you figure out secondary costs (companies leaving cali like rats leaving a sinking ship)?

Benefits are people getting psychiatric care, not killing themselves, being able to work and pay taxes. Costs are people earning over $1M per year having to give 1% of their 4.6% Bush tax cut to the state to pay for mental health.
Yep. Outweigh the costs to me.

hehe. It's funny how there is a rivalry between the two states. I guess it's because they're both huge, have large economies (some would even argue that each state could sustain itself seperate from the Union), and are almost polar opposite on the political scale. Hell, there's even have a California-Texas high school all star football game every year.

oh, and gas in Texas is still around $1.79.

Another example of the willingness of people to steal from others.

Democrats all the way.

If and when I become rich I will worry about the Rich. I really don't see them worrying about us who aren't rich. It's not that I have anything against them, I just don't care.

Whats 10,000 to a millionare?

nobody should foot the bill. let sleeping dogs lie. IMHO they shouldn't increase services to the mentally ill. they should fix their budget problems first.

Well stated 🙂.

fix education first!

Werd. The rich vote in their own personal interest, and so will I. I'll take higher taxes when and if I make over $1M over having no mental health care if I or someone in my family ever need it.

We are already footing the bill, in incarseration, homelessness, lost productivity, broken families, etc.
I really think this will save money over the long term. And even if it doesn't it will save lives.

Good philosophy, it works in so many varieties. Lets see who else we can screw.

This is disgusting. Insanely rich or not, why should they be penalized just because they have money?

My guess is that the people in favor of this bill are either utilitarian in spite of logic, or self-interested in spite of morality.

i thought that this was about mentally ill people not the homeless and incarcerated. as it stands right now the people who are paying for the treatment are the people who can afford to pay for it not the state gov. through taxes. but i will give you that the new tax may save lives.

then perhaps they should be asked to spread the wealth?

There is something to having TOO much money...if its being stockpiled, then whats the use?

There are those who work hard...but even then, if the money is just sitting around making more money off itself, then whats the point if it isn't being used?

Hey, got anything that's not being used at your house right now? An extra television, a second car? Don't mind if I just waltz in and take it, do you? After all, it's not being used.

Nifty, Let's punish those who produce. Maybe if we keep it up, they'll all just give up.

Of course, all the mindless socialists will then cry that there are no jobs...

?Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded?here and there, now and then?are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

This is known as ?bad luck?.?

Am I the only middle class person who things this is assinine? California needs to be let go and handed off to China.

Are you a Californian? Do you make more than 2 million dollars a year? Will this affect you at all in any way? The answers to these questions are no, no, and no!

Yes, but it could set a precedent for other states. Taxing the rich does nothing good but squeezing more money out of them until they give up. And when they give up, we're all fvcked.

the greedy side of me wants to say "yes, take money from those damn millionaires. They can afford it anyways."

The business-major in me understands that this tax is stupid. My dad lived in poverty until he was 8 years old before my grandfather invented some pharmaceutical drugs and became really rich. Yes, some people inherited it, but many did not. No reason they should have to pay unless they want to.

Well, I agree we need more mental health services in CA. Currently, LA county jail is the largest mental health facility in the world. The mental health system is virtually nonexistent in CA. Why should someone have to commit a crime in order to get psychiatric treatment? Even if someone mentally ill attempts suicide, they are given very little treatment and released to try again.
I don't mind paying taxes for them. So I think they should tax everyone to some extent, like a progressive tax, not just the millionaires. I think people should have to pay taxes for mental health services based on their ability.
At the same time, it's not going to stop me from voting for this proposition because of what it aims to do, regardless of how it funds it. The rich are getting taxcuts from Washington, they can afford a tax hike from Sacramento.

You were doing so well, then at the end you fell back into the "boohoo for me, those rich bastards get everything" mentality.

Let's see, my household income is 6 figures. Some would say I'm rich, so let's assume I am.

Because I make too much money:
I can't get the Earned Income Credit.
I can't use the Child Credit.
I can't use Hope Credit or Lifetime Education Credit.
I have to calculate Alternative Minimum Tax (effectively making my normal itemized deductions useless).

So, I ask you, where are my tax cuts?

You should ask Bush. I didn't get no tax cut either. But people making over $1M sure did.
This tax is only for earnings after $1M. Do you think they should get Earned Income Credit?
Do you make more than $1M? Every dollar above $1.2M is now taxed at 35% compared to 39.6% under Clinton.
That's a $46K tax cut on every million after $1M. So they have to pay $10K per Million for healthcare. They are still out with $36K per Million tax cut. Not to mention all the dividend tax cuts they are getting.

I have absolutely no problem with that. The fact is Bush's tax cut act applied to everyone. It did not piecemeal it out to certain groups. And that's the way it should work.

The tax cut definitely applied to me, and I would only be considered wealthy if I lived in a third world country. 😛

another example of geographical envy - or at least that's how I view it.

California has some dumb laws, but to hear a lot of you Texans tell it the state is run by Karl Marx...it's simply not the case.

Quite frankly, the only way I would live in that sh!thole state is if I was paid enough so that I could travel constantly and never have to go home. Geographical envy? You wish. Once the businesses have finished running to Nevada and other surrounding states that aren't trying to ruin them, give California back to Mexico on the condition they have to take the retards that live there as well.

About... ohhh... $10,000.

You know what 10K is to Bill Gates? $10,000.

You know what 10K is to a government worker? Other peoples' money.

there is a point at which someone has too much money. It's the point to which the remainder of what you don't use becomes useless. Suck it up...if you aren't using it and you have everything you need and want, why not redistribute to the community...

but I digress, you're an ass and can't see that.

Money is only useless when it is sitting in your mattress or otherwise parked somewhere out of the cycle. If it is sitting in the bank, the bank is loaning it out. If the person owning it is smart, it has generally been invested and is getting a better return. Either way, it is not "useless", it is being used.

Even if someone is rich and spending $1,000,000 on their wedding... guess what, that money was just used for something. Take an econ class before taking about this sort of stuff. And if you have already taken a university level econ class, take another one and pay attention this time around.

You're a fscking retard, but apparently you can't see that. Do you really think there is a point at which money becomes useless simply because you have a lot of it?

No, he thinks here is a point at which money becomes useless simply because other people have a lot of it.
