some years ago at the VMA's a group won video of the year or whatever and director Spike Jonez came out on stage out of nowhere and rushed the mic. Then told the crowed this group sucks and the Beastie Boys video he directed was better. He was escorted off stage, and if I recall correctly there were applause from the crowd. I know the next day nobody was saying "fuck Spike Jonez!" and many were talking about how hilarious it was.

This does not sound like an accurate retelling of the story. IIRC, one of the Beastie Boys, incognito, rushed the stage and yelled that Jonez should have won, but the whole thing was a gag and was treated as such. The video Jonez directed for the BB was "Sabotage" so draw your own conclusions about whether it was a joke.

Kanye took the mic from a 19yr old first time award winner, and not joking at all, expressed his opinion that she didn't deserve to win. Add this to the several times he's done the same inappropriate thing in past award shows, and he further cements his reputation as a dick.

It was Jonez with a weird hat and mustache, I believe he called himself Nathanal Hornblower. It was not scripted by MTV and nobody had any idea he was going to do it, the band who was giving their acceptance speech has zero clue what the fuck was going on. Do you call it a gag because he had on a funny costume? The bottom line, both times artists were disrespect on stage while winning an award. I don't see how either are any different. Yes Kanye has done this before, but that doesn't make what Spike did any less offensive. Same fucking thing, both are wrong, and it's not a big deal in either case.

Then it's pretty clear you have some analytical difficulties. It's not a big deal.

MTV has 2 similar incidents at their awards show, where 2 people were caught off guard by somebody else rushing the stage to proclaim that person didn't deserve to win. There is absolutely no difference between either incident. Kanye is black, Spike Jonez is white, the both made a totally asshat move and dicked somebody out of their moment in the spotlight. How am I making this a race thing when I'm saying both a white and a black dude are equally shitty? And to the idiots on here who say "well Kanye did it before, so he's worse!" do you think the group Spike shat on saying they shouldn't have won felt any better because he had never done that before? They didn't fucking care, their moment was ruined by an asshat.

Um.

That happy-go-lucky R.E.M. ditty "Everybody Hurts" took home four awards, including Moonmen for Breakthrough Video and Best Director. While the band attempted to accept the latter trophy, Nathaniel Hornblower (aka Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys) stormed the stage proclaiming Spike Jonze should have won for directing the Beasties' "Sabotage." In addition to screaming, "This is an outrage! This is a farce," he also claimed that he had the original idea for Star Wars.

Yes, Adam Yauch is white. He was also pulling a stunt/gag/joke as an alter-ego unless you believe he really thinks he came up with Star Wars first. If Bruno or Borat came out and interrupted an acceptance speech no one would have twittered about it being ghastly or inappropriate. This aint the Oscars. But Kanye wasn't making a joke, or a gag. He was for cerial, and as such, is a scumbag. But that's not news.

That you can't distinguish between something a guy who looks like this does and Kanye is pretty sad. It's not about race, even black artists immediately condemned him for being a dick.

I have lost all respect for Jay Leno. How many times does this idiot (Kayne) have to say something stupid before people will stop shoving a mic in front of his face. I understand why Leno did it, he is launching a new show and wanted the ratings but I don't care.

A quote from a story on the interview "West said he knew he was wrong the moment he handed the microphone back to Swift, when he was bathed in boos." Sorry, no. It wouldn't have mattered if the crowd had cheered. It was still wrong. Crowd reaction was irrelevant. The guy still doesn't get it.

I watched the interview, and I'm pretty sure he said that he knew he was wrong when he handed the microphone back to her and she didn't continue her acceptance speech.

He should have known it was wrong before he jumped on the stage to begin with.

I, too, saw the interview with Leno. Kanye was already a scheduled guest before all that shit went down, right? My thought was that Kanye probably asked Jay if he could talk about it to make himself feel/look better.

Of course. I'm not defending the guy, but saying he realized it was wrong because of the audience reaction is a bit better than saying he realized it was wrong because of Taylor Swift's reaction.

I believe so. At the beginning of the interview Jay thanked him for honoring his commitment and said that many people would have canceled.

My thought was that Kanye probably asked Jay if he could talk about it to make himself feel/look better.

I don't think Jay would have let him perform as a musical guest without talking about the incident first, because that would have made Jay look really bad.

I wasn't attacking/accusing you of anything. :) I'm just irritated by the asshole that is Kanye. And you're probably right about Jay.
