Let me just add that unless it's kept loaded and accessible, it may be useless. It's very hard to load a magazine with a bloody hand. Take it from me.

There's very little difference in caliber. .40's tend to have the most recoil, then .45's, then 9mm. The only difference in the real world is stopping power. Someone who catches a .45 to the torso is probably going to be floored, same with a .40. Someone who catches a 9mm to the torso may just keep doing what there doing. 9mm is a fast moving small round that will go right through it's target, .40 and .45 are slower and larger, and tend to transfer more of their momentum to whatever target they encounter. I prefer a .40... It's a fast traveling round that still has some weight, right in the middle. As far as recoil control, if you learn proper shooting technique you can handle any fire arm, regardless of your personal size/weight/strength/whatever. controlling a hand gun comes down to technique and experience. So go get some experience.

You take a 9mm to the chest you are done for the night, period.

I loathe these "hurr if people are high you need to cut their head of with and axe and then shoot their arms of with a 12 gauge or they will keep coming" idiot comments.

The size of these calibers and the muzzle velocity is not big enough to change much of the outcome, the type of bullet might but even with an FMJ9 you will stop anyone with one shot to the chest.

I'd aim for the gut though.

.45 is great IMHO, but not many concealable options with capacity for most people.

.40 vs 9mm is a wash. Pick the gun you feel best with.

I like my CZ P01 and it's rated for +P and +P+ is also totally fine with it.

Where you put the bullet is what matters.
