Anyone here can tell me the real reason of why Vista is crappier than XP for gaming???? but I mean the real technical one...

I ask because... I have my Vista with a bunch of services stopped... almost nothing in memory just windows... and the firewall... and the look is just like windows 95 lol.... gray bar and such...

For x64 apps and games that support x64 cpus Vista is great because well all the latest drivers out for new hardware that support Vista and the ability to use more then 3.5 gigs of ram. For anything that does not take use of x64 cpu's and doesn't require more then 3.5 gigs of ram XP is good enough and better then Vista x32 IMHO.

Do you have superfetch turned off? Because turning that off will actually make your load times in games longer. Vista skins aren't going to make an impact in your game performance either.

There isn't a reason Vista is worse than XP for gaming because it's not worse than XP.

Vista and XP are the same for gaming and Vista offers things like DX10 which makes it the best choice now and for the future- there is no reason to use XP 'for gaming'. Also, do not disable things if you don't know what you are doing, Vista is designed to run out of the box and does not require any tweaking- the memory footprint might be higher than XP and that is because of Superfetch which is a good thing.

Yea, for repeating maps, and probably textures and things, the load times are greatly reduced.

No, it just makes your HDD light blink longer after booting while it loads up the cache. It doesn't effect the performance of the PC at all. Vista is usable a lot quicker than XP after booting.

I switched from XP to Vista for gaming. Didn't experience much of a drop of FPS in my games. Nor any more crashes than XP. FPS only drops if I turn on that Aero effect.

WoW: XP = 80-100ish FPS, Vista = 80-100ish FPS
CoD4: XP = 50-60 FPS, Vista = 40-60 FPS

Windows actually loads faster in Vista than back when I had XP.

You don't have to do that. Aero automatically gets turned off when you go to a full screen app or game.

The problem here is, people don't know what the hell they're talking about or doing.

I run WoW in windows mode, maybe that's why it lags with the Aero on

you can fix that...

Find the WoW.exe in Programs Files, right click, select the Compatibility tab, and tick 'Disable visual theses'. Now whenever you run WoW, Aero Glass will be disabled.

Quick off-topic question, I didn't think it warranted its own thread - does Vista use ntfs? And does it support other file systems (aside from fat16/32)?

It was crappier a while ago, it still is crappier if you have less than 4GB of ram imo (2GB for people who run their games at "normal people" settings) but apart from that theyre pretty similar. I notice absolutely no difference from superfetch in map loading time etc, so over all vista = XP with regards to gaming.

Oh but one plus for vista is that if your game crashes (it sometimes happens in vista just like XP) and hogs the screen so that alt+tab dosent work, ctrl+alt+del always works and always gets you to the task manager to end the troublesome game. In XP with a screen hogging game this either wouldnt work at all or you would have to guess with the keyboard as the game was still hogging the screen despite task manager being the active window.

One negative for vista is that with my computer anyways windows dreamscene (the thing responsible for the nice waterfall background on the desktop) will ah heck up and leave you with a messed up screen once exiting from a full screen app.

So overall pretty trivial stuff really. Ctrl+alt+del update in vista is useful though.
