Real case of "gay cowboys"

I vaguely remember someone posting here that there were no gay cowboys and that Brokeback Mountain was bringing all cowboys into disrepute. Here's an interesting article about two gay farmers from Oklahoma. They are now elderly (one of them dead) after living together for 20 years on the farm rasing cattle.

Cross posting in different forums is frowned upon.

Now...did the guy leave the land in a will? AFAIK you can leave whatever you want to whoever you want in your will.

yeah, he left it in a will. but the relatives of the deceased challenged the will. in situations like that, because of legal precedent, if the couple is married the court will defer to the surviving member of the couple. if the couple isn't married, as in this case, the court will defer to the relatives. so the relatives got everything.

I read the article. It looks like his will was not legal, so the courts deferred everything to the relatives. I see no problem.

Why? Because he failed to follow the proper laws for his area, it's my fault?

Well its their fault for not getting that one extra witness now, isn't it? They should've seen it coming...or the guy who died had a sh!tty estate lawyer.

Are you posting this to point out that theres gay farmers, or to point out how one individual lost everything?

the point is that if they were heterosexual, laws and legal precedent would have supported the couple not the relatives. also, even if they had dotted the is and crossed the ts, chances are the relatives still would have won.

people like you make me realize that there can never really be genuine friendship between heterosexuals and homosexuals. heterosexuals like you never get past their ingrained bigotry and hatred, no matter how liberal they profess to be.

If a cetain percentage of the population is homosexual then yes there are or were homosexual cowboys, doctors, police, senators, governors, teachers, etc.

Don't let your homophobia put you into a state of denial.

We will never know the outcome of that since that is not what happened.

If the laws do not support you in that manner, then you should be making good sure that your will is done properly and following ALL the legal requirements.

If the will was done correctly and they still had the land taken away then that's a different story, but that is not what happened.

your deeply ingrained bigotry is reflected in your every statement on this topic. and the sad thing is, you will never see it because of your vantage point as a heterosexual.
