In reality, it takes what, 30 - 60 seconds to wait for someone writing a check?
Are you really in that big of hurry?

You seem to be forgetting;

60 seconds to write the check
60 seconds to fumble around in their purse looking for their licence
30-45 seconds for the cashier to copy down their licence
15 seconds while the check is verified and printed in the machine

and YES, i am in a hurry.
You forgot the 30 seconds they stand there with that dumb look on there face when the cashier tells them the amount and they realize that they should get the checkbook out of their purse.

good point, why is the only person who knows they will be writing the check always is the least prepared and the most suprised???

All those who write cheques for shopping at the grocery stores for 4 dollars should be shot. What a slow down in the line! Makes me mad. In Canada we dont write cheques nearly as much as in the US.... Fargo is terrible. EVERYONE USES CHEQUES!!! AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGG!!

I only use checks these days to pay rent. 4 or so years of having a checking account, I've written a grand total of 48 checks. Check 1049 sitting in checkbook, waiting for its day in the spotlight

We use checks as often as possible. Never had any problems with speed. It takes no longer than the authorization process needed by many stores to clear a credit card. Besides, the cancelled checks are nice to look back on if needed. Oh, and you don't have to worry about compromising your credit card or check card number if you don't want to.

Instead of making express lines where checks aren't allowed, they should make a check only line so check writers will realize the folly of their ways :p

Such as somebody uses your number and empties your checking account. I've had it happen before.

Having your credit card charged up is one thing. It can be taken care of over time. When your check card is stolen and used, your cash is gone until you can convince the bank those transactions weren't yours. Until then you're fscked.

And a check cannot be used to drain an account? Same thing my friend. I rarely use a check card anyway. CC all the way for me.

Not as easily, assuming the check is signed. Sure you can maybe do something with the routing numbers and account numbers on the check or possibly finding a way to forge it, but it's not as easy as scamming something using the numbers pulled off of a check card.

I don't leave my checkbook laying around, and once it's signed there isn't too much harm that can come from it. But, somebody scamming my check card numbers poses a much greater risk.

Routing and Acct. number is all you need. Really I am suprised that more bank and check card fraud does not exist.

Any internet or phone order system will accept a credit card. Having the card would allow anybody to purchase just about anything they want easily.

There are far fewer places where having a checking account routing number will let you buy something.

For small time crooks (for instance, the guy working the register at the gas station who stole my number and ordered a bunch of crap online) a credit/check card is far easier and more worthwhile than scamming checking account routing numbers.

Terminal Fee? I've never been charged one and i use my check card EVERYWHERE. Its not like your taking money out at a different bank or something, i think almost every bank gives free usage of their check cards at stores.
When I order checks I have my DL# added. This way I rarely get ask to show my license.

I prefer it over a check card because I spend less and can save more. They are sorta like a charge card - too easy not to use. :)

OK, you have your checks printed with your License# on it, so you don't have to show your ID, do you know how dumb that is?
Someone can easily steal your purse or checkbook, and go write a check and the moronic cashier will see the lince# and be like"Score" i don't need to write down their ID.

This is why i only use checks to pay bills, like my car payment and electric. Everything else comes out of my check card. That way i can also dispute charges :D

Well you'd better get ready because if Wally World and a number of other retailers get their way, you're either going to have to pay them a fee to use a check card or possibly even not be able to use it at all. Lawsuit is supposed to come to trial at the end of this month.
