With the direction as of lately, I fully expect smoking tobacco to be fully outlawed in the near future.
 
It would be easier to build a time machine, go back to colonial America and introduce the pot plant to tabacco plantation owners - than convince those who fear weed.

With public healthcare I fully support your opinion. If healthcare is subsidized, then the entire system bears the weight of one smoker's decision to smoke. If healthcare was kept private, government should have no right to tell people they cannot smoke if they are not harming others. The only other option I can see is that cigarettes are taxed enough to fully pay for the cost of any public healthcare associated to the costs of the sicknesses that they cause, which in that case, you might as well ban it. Somebody posted the numbers of cigarette taxes vs healthcare costs associated to cigarettes, it isn't even 50%.

Same goes with the diseases for anything bad for you, you can't invite government only half into your house, they gotta come the whole way in!

On the topic of marijuana though, legalize it, and regulate it similarly to alcohol with an age restriction, driving laws, etc. Would probably help out with crime a lot because the money would start pouring into legitimate markets as opposed to drug dealers at home and abroad.

If having a public healthcare system would outlaw the use of tobacco, then having a public healthcare system is anti-liberty. Anything anti-liberty I'm going to be against as are most Americans. Lets not forget tobacco use is on a sharp decline, new customers aren't rolling in like they used to, many people are quitting and moving on to other forms of nicotine consumption which are more safe. What's required is being more assholish and making people realize THEY CANNOT LIVE FOREVER AND WE WILL NOT SPEND MILLIONS TO TRY AND KEEP YOU ALIVE. You just aren't worth it, sorry no one is.

Tell you right now, you tell me I have a terminal disease, no cure. I can use 100,000 dollars of Medical treatment and extend my life from 1 year to 5 years, I'd probalby turn it down and I'd make the 100k in 5 years. It's just not worth the hassle. I'll enjoy my last year and go out, not a bitch like so many others who have been conditioned to fear death.

I agree. I'm only making the point that with public healthcare, smoking bans, etc, it's all just a form of taking liberties away one at a time. People who support public programs don't realize that's the path they are on but it is. If government is collecting taxes to foot the bill, sooner or later they are going to feel they have the right to direct your life, with the warning labels on cigarettes it's already happening.

Maybe i'm making a connection that isn't there, and public healthcare is a right, and government understands that it is sacred to allow the people whom they pay for to still be able to make the unhealthy decisions, because its part of being American. I just don't believe that the government will always respect these parts of people's lives when they feel it is costing them money.
