He's mayor, so he obviously has a history of politics, or successful businesses, or something that got him elected. But he's been getting more and more...weird, as time goes on.

He's now saying that God is mad at America, and that's why he sent hurricaines, and that God is mad at black America, and that's why New Orleans was punished so hard. I mean, hardcore fundies have been saying this all along, but we basically ignore them. It's hard to simply push it aside when it's a mayor saying it. Now he's saying that New Orleans will be a "chocolate city" again? I'm not going to even begin on how odd a statement that is. Can I talk about how I want my part of the country to be a "vanilla" area? That'd be racist, right?

So yeah, why the hell is he such an odd duck? Something in the water? Voodoo curse?

I respect that speaks what he feels!

It could be that he's simply saying what he feels, but you don't usually get people in his position who do that. They have speech writers, PR reps, all that jazz, and only say things that are carefully thought out ahead of time. What is it that makes him so open then?

Don't spout "racist" at me, this is just my humble observation.

Cities with predominately poor African American populations seem to elect the worst leaders. I think they purposely elect people who are like them in terms of speech demeanor and outraged social opinions.

If you disagree with me, I would take a close look at Detroit's mayor (zoot suit wearing big mouth) as a perfect example of this. New Orleans has elected a very similar leader.

With good leadership the black community could make great progress but there is a severe lack of that.

Yeah, I think Katrina has caused him to come unglued. He started out rationally, but when a politician starts talking about plagues and floods as signs from God, you know something's not right.

What about DC, electing a felon/druggie? I'm not disagreeing with you, there has been a giant lack of strong leadership, not just for African-Americans, but for everybody.

It's a black thing. You wouldn't understand 😎

No disrepect at all.

Just an old saying that fits.

In that same vein, you could say southern Americans tend to elect the worst leaders. For example, our weak-speaking, word-stumbling president. He is just like the majority of white southerners in his demeanor and foolhardiness.

It goes both ways, but it's democracy.

Washington DC is predominately African American and poor.

Agreed 100%.

I would rephrase it to say that poor people in general, no matter their race tend to elect leaders that only hurt them.

White and black people are very much alike. What matters is social-economic backgrounds. This is the reason I've consistantly advocated a color-blind society. People are people.

No... Ray Nagin is nuts, and he is helping marginalize African-American politicians.

Change the channel to CNN, they've been talking about it all morning. He wants N.O. to be a "chocolate city". 😕 I seriously think he's crazy.

So all leaders should be weak to avoid an assassin's bullet? Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have been alive for a very long time, and will likely both die of old age. Are they better for not having followied Rev. King's "example."

That was also in the 1960's. A lot has changed. Look at Barack Obama in Illinois. He is going to be a presidential contender for the Democrats someday. JC Watts in Oklahoma. Colin Powell. Condoleeza Rice. The list does go on... and on.... and on.

Exactly. It went both ways in the 1960s. JFK was assassinated and Bobby Kennedy was killed. They were both strong leaders, but they also fought hard against organized crime, which may have led to their deaths.

Nagin went crackhead. He used to be fairly rational and decent -- in fact I liked him, but now he's gone nuts. Probably just the stress getting to him.

Yeah, I don't exactly blame him for his mental condition, but he's definitely getting more extreme as the recovery progresses.

Well now he's going to be on CNN, explaining what he meant. Who thinks he's going to backpeddle like crazy, and who thinks that he's going to stand by his words?

my brother lives in LA... and from what i understand.. Nagin was no rocket scientist, but he was honest and had his heart purely in NO. He was not a backhanded dealer or out for himself... he really cared about the ppl.

then katrina hit and he lost his mind.
