Whiskey bottles, and brand new cars
Oak tree you're in my way
There's too much coke and too much smoke
Look what's going on inside you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Angel of darkness is upon you
Stuck a needle in your arm
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose
One more drink fool, will drown you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Now they call you Prince Charming
Can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes
Say you'll be all right come tomorrow
But tomorrow might not be here for you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

Hey, you're a fool you
Stick them needles in your arm
I know I been there before

One little problem that confronts you
Got a monkey on your back
Just one more fix, Lord might do the trick
One hell of a price for you to get your kicks
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

wow, this sure isn't a subject that's been beaten to death. here are some points to consider that i think most would find hard to disprove:

1. drug use has the potential to kill you. of course, so does just about anything in high enough doses, but it takes less hamburger than crack to stop someone's heart.
2. drugs are illegal more or less for the same reasons given for the prohibition of the 20s: they're harmful substances that affect both the user and those around them with little (if any) social benefit.
3. "responsible drug use" doesn't have to be an oxymoron any more than "drinking responsibly" is. if drugs were studied as exhaustively as alcohol has been, i'm quite sure we could establish a reasonable dosage. however, it is entirely possible that some drugs have no safe dosage that would yield the desired effects, but we just don't know if that's true yet. and as long as studies of questionable integrity keep wholly denouncing drugs, people are going to continue to be misinformed and do dangerous amounts of drugs. sex education is a good analogy. does only promoting abstinence stop teenagers from having sex? or does it just make them have stupid, unprotected sex?

i think chris rock said it best: "People wanna get high." government will never, ever stop people from wanting to experience altered states. has drug use gone down since the war began? every decade brings a new drug, and we haven't exactly eradicated the old ones yet maybe someday we'll finally admit to ourselves that we're approaching ithis whole thing the wrong way. would any study on the positive effects of drinking been made public during the prohibition? probably not. are we just slamming our heads against a wall, trying to deny ourselves of something we obviously want but think is malum in est, rather than malum prohibitum? drug use is no different than alcohol use, and i defy anyone to explain otherwise. the sooner we wise up, the sooner lives (not to mention billions of dollars) will be saved and the healing can begin so we can start treating those with drug addictions the same as we treat alcoholics, and someone can have a glass of scotch, or a joint, or a line of cocaine in the privacy of their own home without becoming a criminal for that reason alone.
