Could I use my 40 gig ide harddrive to load a os and test overclocking on that? It's an older drive prolly 5400rpm. Would the overclocking compensate for lack of hard drive speed?
I would just unplug the sata while I load up the ide. Ideas? I really like the speed the via sata offers.

Yes.

No. But, if you run benchmarks that are not HDD dependent at all (SuperPi comes to mind, as do a number of others), you can minimize the impact of the slow drive. Also, if you first run a benchmark with the slow drive and no overclocking, and then overclock and run the same benchmark, you will still see an improvement in almost all benchmarks.

There's nothing wrong with your proposed solution. And also, the Promise SATA should perform just as fast as the Via. I also recommend listening to theman, since he has the same board as you, and I do not.
