all i want to do is DL the damn R&C demo ... looks like it's going to have to wait some time now cause I'm going to hop on Halo 3.

turn on the system more? v1.93 has been out for awhile.
and if you wanna download an update fast, check the official firmware page and download to a flash drive and update the ps3 that way. but yea, turn on the system more, say at least every week on thursday to check out the store. gives you a reason if you aren't turning it on enough for games or movies, and will let you take care of the update if there is one.

i'd turn it on more if there was more stuff worth playing for it :p

Just turn it on, start the system update and go do something else, it's not that hard to find things to do for 30-45 minutes. Or download them from the net on your PC like destrekor said. Anyways hopefully this XMas with the release of the 40gig version and a lower price tag, more consoles will get into people's hands so that more great games like R&C will get made.

30-45 minutes? Mine take less than 20 to download and install.

And it's really not that often...

Yes, I have DSL and it's 3Mb down. Pretty bad but that's the fastest I can get here.

I've had to update the past 3 or 4 times I've tried to get onto the playstation store.

Ah, that would explain it. I have 10Mb down.

i love the game, that and Super Stardust HD. Excellent games in the vein of the classic style of asteroids that every loves Geometry Wars so much for, but both I enjoy much more over Geometry Wars. however, ED I enjoy mostly for the style of gameplay, and SSHD just plain blows GW, and all other similar titles, out of the water. 3d spherical surface to play asteroids on basically, and the game offers a great challenge. Reminds me, I gotta get back to playing as I never progressed very far.

well I DL'ed the update on the web and it took 5 mins so I'm dlin the R&C demo right now. Too bad it's so large, don't know when I'll be able to play it otnight heh :(

But yah I'll check out that shooter. I own Super Stardust HD and it's pretty damn awesome, but I still like geometry wars better.

check out the videos of the game first, like on 1up and ign. better than completely hating the style of gameplay and wasting $10. ;)

I want to try those games, but if I end up not liking them, I'm just going to be annoyed that I spent $10 on something that I can't try first :(.

I did play the Ratchet and Clank demo yesterday and it was fun, although I found myself defaulting to a Dynasty Warriors mindset while playing at some points (trying to hit triangle to do combos like you do in DW and SW). It was actually my first ratchet and clank game and it wasn't too bad. Also, what are those boxes with the colored gems for? I saw a bunch of 'em along the way and I couldn't pick them up or seemingly do anything with them.

so I got to check it out for like 3 minutes last night.

man oh man ... this game is freaking amazing. I had already played the gamestop demo, and it ran pretty damn smooth aside from tearing. But in this PSN demo, there is absolutely 0 sign of tearing. I could not believe how damn smooth this game ran. The cutscenes are almost pixar quality and it's all rendered real time.

this is really the first PS3 game that I'm truly really excited about. I really hope the game is long and has some fun replayability to it. I loved in part 1 searching for all of the golden nuts. I haven't played any R&C games since the first one and can't wait!

^ Just a note, the cutscenes are made with the in-game engine, but they're all FMV's. If you were to play the demo on a JP PS3, none of the cutscenes would play because the demo would try to fetch the japanese files.

(Ratchet looks different in the JP version)

Are you using your other weapons? They're either ammo or life.

Oh, I used my weapons very sparingly. I noticed that at times I'd get more shells, but I never saw exactly what gave them to me. Thanks!

I did notice an interesting little graphical glitch in the game though. Two of those boxes ended up in trees and they were fading in and out like crazy (almost like you think they were going to disappear) but they just sat there. I assume it's some collision bug with the tree.

I undertand what you mean by they are all FMV taken from the real time engine, but that bolded part makes no sense.

Why would playing the US demo on a Jap PS3 make the US demo look for a different file?

Either way it's executing the same binary.

Also do you have more info on the cutscenes? I had just assumed they were actually done real time, especially since there was some noticeable tearing (in the earlier demo).

The Japanese version of R&C has a different character design for Ratchet (bigger eyes and eybrows). This isn't a problem for the actual gameplay, but it needs different FMV's for cutscenes. They didn't include the Japanese FMV's because that would have made the file size too big.

(this was explained on GAF by one of the developers, BTW)

I think what purbeast0 was attempting to say is that he would have thought that the links to any FMV would have been hardcoded. So then it wouldn't matter what system you played the demo on, the videos would still play. But I guess the devs are saying that the game chooses the videos to play based on the region of the console. This would make sense in the final game if each each copy is going to include all the videos from various regions. So the code must be the same in the demo.

BTW, has anyone over at GAF asked the dev why the options to invert the look axes are missing from the PSN demo?? In the Gamestop demo disc version you could invert both the X and Y axes to suit your preferences... but both options are missing from the PSN demo. That concerns me a bit since the PSN demo comes from a later build of the game. Surely they wouldn't remove those option from the final game?

They didn't say why it's like that, but it's definitely in the final game.

Looking forward to trying out the demo. I plan on getting a PS3 hopefully by the end of the week, but I still haven't decided if I should just wait for the $399 model next week.

BTW, this might not actually be out? Its a week early if it is, but I can see it on multiple sites that the release date is now 10/23 instead of 10/31.

It will be in (at least some) stores tomorrow. I called up Circuit City tonight and they said 10/30, but I called up EB Games (now Gamestop) and they said they'll have it tomorrow. I'm betting on all stores tomorrow, but since I can't be sure, I don't wanna just throw that out.

I did read the IGN review too, they pretty much loved it and said Team A struck again or something like that .

my local gamestop here in Columbus, OH confirmed it will be available tomorrow (24th). This is the norm with Tuesday release dates for non-major titles that ship early and en masse: eastern stores have the game for sale a day after release date. Not sure if the west coast gets them on the actual release date or not. But that's how it's always been here in Ohio. :(

but then there is GameSpot, who further proves their hatred for all things PS3 and gave it a 7.5.
Now, I would say, sure, it's expected for some reviewers not to like it. But generally when a large percentage of critics score the game on average, higher than 9.0, seeing something like a 7.5 is kind of an eye-opener, until you see it's from GameSpot.
Regardless, I'll be picking it up, and it's nice to see a game for the PS3 that even IGN loves, giving it a 9.4!
