Honestly, 1% is actually listenable, the other 99% of it is just pure crap filled with foul language and several instances of the N word...I rather watch Katy Perry all day while she performs "California gurls" while wearing nothing but a bikini.
 
I'd agree with the OP's statement when it comes to mainstream hip hop. Its in a serious 80's hair metalesque period right now, and needs its Nirvana to shake things up.

How can you simultaneously argue against vapid music while saying you'd rather listen to other shallow music? Maybe if you like shallow music you should just STFU and leave discussion to the adults.

its about time somebody made a thread like this. everyones been thinking the same thing, but has been too scared to post it on internet forums... til now.

*yawn* it's always good to use the .1% of rap you've actually heard to speak on 99% of rap. OP is wrong, I have hundreds of rap CD's that have little to no cussing. I listened to the radio for 20 minutes yesterday and from that I've come to the conclusion that 99% of all music sucks. So if the 99/1 ratio OP claims is valid for rap the same should be said for all music. Which means there's as much good rap much as any other genre.

I really don't know much about rap and hip-hop, but I would guess there is actually a lot of good stuff out there. Listening to popular Rap and saying it's 99% garbage is like listening to Linkin' Park and saying metal is 99% garbage.
