RANT: why cant i print in black when my color cartridges are empty!

On my HP I can select Grayscale, and then I get more options, one of which is Black Only.

I remember the old days when ink tanks didn't have enough intelligence to say, "I'm empty! You must buy a new one!" Refill it 200x and it won't care. No chip resetting or replacing, none of that stuff. If the ink tank wasn't there, the printer didn't know or care.

That was my good old Epson 600.


I'll have to check out my printer. It's a Minolta 2400W color laser printer. I wonder if it'll do anything with only a black toner cartridge installed?
It's still got the original toner cartridges in there, and I bought it in Fall of 2005.
