I was telling my friends this recently. Some people are really smart and work really hard for some company. With a little more work, they'd be working just as hard as someone starting their own company. Why not just start your own company?

Why should I let my job "define" me and become a part of my life as most people do?

Me? My goal everyday is to not get fired. Make myself look good. Not be immoral (I try to be a decent guy, I'm not a bad employee). And keep my mind fresh so when I go home, I can work on my business, which is where my real effort goes to.

But some people their job is everything to them. It consumes and defines them. Yet when success arrives, companies rarely compensate their employees for all the blood, sweat, and tears they put into it's success.

Most CEOs these days are nothing but corporate philosophers. Sitting in leather chairs out of harms way, out of the customer's eye, making some obscure plan and then directing their minions to figure out the details and make sense of their abstract corporations directives.

why are you asking us why you should be doing X, Y and Z?

why not just quit and work full time on your own business?
we live in a free country where you are free to pursue your own goals. obviously something (a paycheck) is keeping you there.

Then OP can become a Corporate America scammer and post how lazy and ungrateful his employees are.

I love my corporate benefits, guaranteed pay, and 3-5 year contract terms.

Thanks corporate overlords, I appreciate my steady weekly check and 3 weeks of vacation per year.

He wasn't asking about himself......he was asking in general, people as a whole, why do they opt for corporate slavedom

This is me (the risk averse part). I have a great job and make pretty good money. Sure, I could start my own company and have a huge potential financial upside, but I could also lose my house and everything else I own. I'm comfortably upper middle class, married with two kids and extremely happy in that position.

When you negotiate salary.. make sure it includes some company stock. I think there are quite a few people who got some early stocks from Microsoft and did not mind working their asses off for the man.

fortunately, theres nothing that says that YOU cant be that guy. you want to get 'scammed' thats of your own volition.

you forget I also get paid. compensation = (money + benefits)/time


also, tell me what companies (corporate or otherwise) give more than 3 weeks of vacation per year. the self employed people I know sure as fuck don't get 3 weeks of vacation per year.
