talking about italy taking falls??????

um did you see the replay for the french penalty shot? gimme a break.

i totally agree that footballers are making a mockery of the greatest sport in the world by acting like their on the brink of death whenever they get nudged.

teh lame:
- player gets tapped
- player screams and falls
- player rolls around clutching his leg in agony
- ref calls foul
- ref comes over to check on said player
- ref calls for the stretcher
- coaches and trainers run out
- priest comes out to give the player his last rights because it's obvious that it was a fatal tap
- stretcher comes
- player stands up and, by the grace of God, hobbles over to the sideline
- player runs back onto the field in 5 seconds after being on the sideline

right, but my comment about Materazzi's verbal insults were, in my opinion, underhanded. It's not right to hit someone, but it's just as bad to aggravate someone with racial slurs/personal insults on national TV. If Materazzi were mic'ed, I'm sure his actions would've been different.

Of course, this is assuming what Materazzi said WAS racial/personal...

italy had 20x the dives france did. i only saw about 3 dives on the french side that whole game. usually, the french players got back up and played the fvcking game. the goddamn italians dove and cried bloody murder at least 13 times.

it's typical of the italian team.

Doboji, with all due respect, you look like a 20 ton Mack truck. I am guessing that you are somewhere around the 95+ percentile of weight (at least among people who are still mobile enough to play sports).

If you look carefully, you will see that soccer players have muscular legs, but are fairly thin overall (some are very thin). It is going to hurt them a HELL of a lot more than it hurts you to get head butted by another pro-soccer player.

Edit: you are well over 95th percentile - http://www.halls.md/chart/men-weight-w.htm

Seriously I hate these wussie soccer players rolling around as if they'll gonna die.

Put them into NHL and it will fix them right up.

It does not take much to break the collar bone or to crack a rib. It happens in boxing and UFC matches relatively often, and those guys are wearing gloves and the opponent generally is blocking.
It's against the rules in UFC to strike the collarbone. Ribs are fair game though. Overall the UFC is a pretty pussified sport since it came back on PPV TV. The earlier ones were much better with few rules.

The Italians are especially adept at flopping. That said it's a shame that Zidane lost his cool and whether that Italian would have fake it or not he still would/should have been red carded for his actions.

True but every time Zidane fell he immeditaly would look up at the ref crying for a foul.
which proves the OP's point. all of them are panzy ass drama queens.

Oh, and the NBA is any better?
I thought the NBA was bad until I watched the World Cup. The NBA Players are B-list actors compared to the academy award winners in the World Cup.

Why I didn't enjoy the world cup...

I think that the sport of soccer itself is a beautiful art... I think the athletes who play it are some of the most physically gifted athletes in the world. I think the sport is incredibly demanding both in terms of skills, and in terms of endurance.

and then

I go to the front page of cnn.com, and I see the italian player laying face down on the ground whining like a little baby because he got headbutted in the chest. Are you fvcking kidding me? These guys are such drama queens... I feel like I couldn't get through 2 minutes of a match before one of these pansys does a double back flip holding their face or leg or arm and crashing onto the turf crying like a 2 year old girl who just got their barbie confiscated.

It's gotten to the point now where crying is an important and strategic element in soccer matches... WTF?!?! In my mind that concept instantly makes the game unwatchable. The World Soccer league or world cup comittee or someone needs to get their ass in gear and do something to penalize the blatant wussiness now being rewarded in soccer.

Until this crap is taken care of... I think the name debate between Soccer/Football/American Football can be resolved by calling Soccer what it really is...

Panzyball.

i agree with you max. i have played soccer for 13 years (since i was 6, 19 now) and i refuse to watch professional soccer because most players take a dive in order to draw a call and do small cheating like pulling on jerseys.

when i was watching italy vs. france yesterday, there were plenty of "injuries" where the injured person could have easily gotten up (injury wasnt that big a deal). zidane - the guy was caught off guard, so it definitely could have hurt a lot (plus taken the wind out of him). but yeah, professional soccer players are diving, whining pansies.

edit:

and for the record, i am tall, thin, and weak - 5' 11'', 150lbs, little fat but little muscle either. i get knocked quite easily, but i never dive to draw a foul (i will look at the ref for a legit call though) and i always try and get back on my feet, back into the game ASAP. generally rule of thumb: play the whistle. if the ref doesnt call it, whining wont fix it.

Slightly off topic, but I still can't stand watching international soccer.

If you take away the nationalism element from the sport, it would have lower TV ratings than Canadian curling.

Let's call it what it is: and excuse to wave your flag because the socialist country you live in doesn't give you many oppurtunities to do much else.

Keep in mind that these people train their necks to headbutt a ball at ridiculous speeds. That wasn't a "run your head into a chest headbutt." It was a very powerfull blow.

I just cracked up thinking about what sort of neck training that might entail.

Cheerleaders came to mind. 😛

why you gotta be bringing the NBA into this? 😛
atually, it reminds me of the NBA and players faking a fall to draw an offensive foul.

That's exactly what I thought. The floppers that come to my mind are Manu Ginobli and Vlade Divac. I guess they learned to flop from soccer in their home country.

you DO realize that these guys' heads are not soft or anything, right? come on, they headbutt soccer balls like it's nobody's business; Materazzi got a full frontal assault.

Oh please have you ever gotten socked in the chest before? I'm sorry it doesnt do that to you... I don't care if the guy has a steel plate in his head... you just absolutely cannot generate enough force to really hurt someone by headbutting them in the chest.

The italian was queening it up big time.

-Max

Probably a little acting going on, but I am sure there was more force in that headbutt that you think. Also, that was an obvious ejection anyways.

His head barely even touched him. All of the backwards motion comes from Matezarri jumping backwards. Look at his legs..

It looks exactly like a poorly executed "hit" in a Kung Fu movie.

-Max

ah, and there's quite a difference. I can't say this for sure, but I don't think Materazzi was taller than 6' and heavier than 220 lbs.

Looked it up. Materazzi is 6'4" but only 180 lbs. Zidane is about 6'3" and 172 lbs. The way he fell down smells like a dive. Remember newton's first law. Of course the red card was still justified.

I thought Vlade Divac was a damn good drama queen in the NBA, but this clearly was a performance worth an Academy Award.

Sure, it's a headbutt, but he clearly was acting a bit.

I LOVE football. But I HATE divers, whiners, fakers, shirt grabbers, and trippers so much that it makes me digusted watching games.

call diving, just like hockey does.

I weigh 160lbs and sometimes get knocked around quite a bit but I get up and move back into the play so long as it was a legal hit... I get sticked in the head accidentally sometimes and don't even whine when the call is missed. I just can't stand when someone acts like they've been shot with a cannon when someone so much as touches them... crying to the refs half the game.

at 6'4" 180... there's no way a little headbutt like that would do that much damage... Like I said... I'm calling big time queen panzy ass.

i love soccer, but the officiating was awful. with refs who would allow every dive to be a free kick or a penalty, it just encouraged players to act dramatic, and really took away from the game. dozens of guys fell, and sat there for a moment, then sprinted away when they realized they were going to get a foul and a free kick out of it. lame.

if the refs didnt give into it, the players wouldnt have bothered acting like such pansies. you could watch replays all day long and see a more unnecessary foul calls than you could count out of this tournament :/

shame, this was the first one i really watched, and i looked forward to it. but after round 1, most of it was boring.

i love soccer. i hate how wussy it's gotten, though. i wish the refs would only call the hard/obvious fouls and not anything physical. it's frigging soccer... the best sport in the world. no physicality? are you kidding?
