Time to re-wire. Its amazing what all can happen when you hook the 120 AC line over to the cable line... 😉

PS: I'm back! 🙂

Nope.

f-i-l-t-r-e.

That's the proper way to spell. Americans think they're smarter by changing the way words are spelled and then correcting people who spell those words correctly.😉

colour, fibre, flavour, etc....

How could he steal your cable internet unless he knew your MAC address?

Or was he just stealing TV?

i know that at least on comcast, MAC address has nothing to do with it. all you have to do is plug in and you're good to go.

Same here.

Unless he has a modem that will allow him to connect to Rogers' servers, he won't get jack either.

They don't allow generic modems. If you want service, you get their modem.

Isn't stealing cable a felony ?
You know, I think it is! I know that purchasing a descrambler is a felony, and I think it's because that constitutes stealing cable. I wonder what stealing internet service is. Should definitely be a gross misdemeanor at least.

Incidentally, any first-year EE major or anybody who's taken a 200-level EE course knows how to make a basic descrambler.

Purchasing a descrambler is legal, using it is not.

I thought that law was changed...Also they never have ads for descramblers anymore in Popular Science

Rogers (in ontario at least) does not use MAC addresses from the network clients to authenticate, but I don't know if they keep track of some sort of address on the modem.

Hmmm. I know with Insight and previously, AT&T they recognize you by your MAC address. This is also why routers have the clone MAC feature.

If anyone tries to hook up to my cable internet, they wont get anything unless they have my MAC address.

Come to think of it, my Mom's Roadrunner is the same way.

They keep track of what modems are allowed on the system.

Not sure how they do it, but when my modem became unbound from it serial # my service stopped. I had to call them to reset everything and boom! I was back online again.

It was all in fun.

filtre is a legit spelling of filter.

Just as metre (meter) is for length.

hahaha yeah I always use metre and all the "ou" spellings, and even the "z" (not "s") in all those words that MSWORD tries to 'fix' for you.

This is kinda off topic and kinda on topic, but, I took a job as a Charter Pipeline installer as a summer job this summer and from experience, it would be so easy to jack cable and internet service if you knew what you were doing. Especially if you live in an apartment building or any building where the existing wiring is intact. Charter has absolutely no security measures in place.

I was at this one ladies house and she had a modem hooked up for a whole year without paying a dime for internet service. I went out to her place to relocate an outlet and when I called in to close out the work order, the operator was like, "modem, what modem, they aren't paying for interent service." I said, "well obviously this modem has been provisioned at some point and it's working on our network."

Charter is friggin clueless and the whole operation is mickey mouse in my opinion. Oh well, I learned alot and I made a crapload of money. Only 2 weeks left of listening to customers tell me exactly where to put a damn wallplate. Maybe at my last job on my last day, I'll tell the customer where they can stick the friggin wallplate.

Reminds me of the time a pizza place was calling my girlfriend and yelling at her for jacking them on the pizza she ordered but didn't pay for.

Turned out not only had someone tapped in and used her phone line they didn't pay for their pizza that they ordered on it. :Q
