RANT: My Cable was jacked

This sad tale started Monday just before 2:00 PM when I got home from work and my cable-modem was offline. I powercycled the modem to see if it was something simple. Nope, that wasn't it. So I called up my ISP (Rogers Cable) to see if they were having any outages in my area. I was told there were no outages here. Hmmm, interesting I thought. I was also told that my modem was the only one out. So I booked a technician to come over today to see what was the cause.

As a test I connected it to my TV and got no channels at all. Nothing. I called the local number for my cable company (Rogers Cable) and verified that my account was fine and no disconnect order was given.

The tech came over about a half hour ago checked the connections. My liine had -13 on their meter which basically meant no signal was getting through. I suggested we check the cableroom in my apt building. So when we checked it out, lo and behold someone had an identical filtre as mine (the ones they use for us are very unique). So he calls in to verify whether their setup is legit. Nope, it wasn't. That was my filtre and my service going to apt 303. So he cut their line off and reconnected mine. Before he left he went a filed a report with Rogers about it and then informed my Super as well.

The cable room is locked and requires a special key to get in. Unfortunately the key is stored in a secured box, but you can use a vendors key to open it.

Now everything is back to normal.

time to visit your new friends in apartment 303, along with your largest friends in tow.:Q

My neighbors always steal cable from me. But then my cable hookup is exposed outside, easy to splice. Lets just say I got a nice collection of 3-way cable splitters. I guess some people never learn.

How could he steal your cable internet unless he knew your MAC address?

Or was he just stealing TV?

Isn't stealing cable a felony ?
You know, I think it is! I know that purchasing a descrambler is a felony, and I think it's because that constitutes stealing cable. I wonder what stealing internet service is. Should definitely be a gross misdemeanor at least.

Incidentally, any first-year EE major or anybody who's taken a 200-level EE course knows how to make a basic descrambler.

What a frickin moron. They had to have known that eventually someone is going to notice and that the cable is going directly to them. Idiots. I hope the apartment complex kicks them, otherwise I'd be pissed.

I forgot to make something very clear, which is why I was laughing when I realized what happened.

I only get and pay for Hi-Speed internet access. No cable TV. The filtre allows me to receive 8 channels at best.

He got jack sh!t cable TV for his troubles.

im assuming TV. i knew someone who did this once. their cable boxes were outside the building in a shanty box. but the thing is every port had a corresponding wire the was "live" all you had to do was plug your wire into your port, which is what i guess the real cable man would have to do.

Purchasing a descrambler is legal, using it is not.

Imagine giving apt.303 a visit and lo and behold it's a hottie!!
I'd still poop on her. The only difference is that there might be a market for a video of it.

Ah, right you are. I think. My mind is like a steel trap: rusty.

If that's the case, I think I know why. Descrambler = inductor. Seriously. That's it. Just get a variable-strength inductor and you have a descrambler. Hella ghetto, huh?

Long-time apt dweller here.

The cable room is a locked room huh? Who's got keys? The super.

Yeah, there's that service keybox thing, but 9 times out of 10, the super/manager of a building is in on it when something illegal goes down. I have seen it first-hand, many, many times. 🙁

My last place I lived in, there was a month-long string of burglaries. Thankfully, I didn't get hit. Most of them were confined to the first floor and I lived upstairs.

Finally, the cops set up a sting and staked the place out. They caught the bastards. Punkass kids. Guess what? One of them was the nephew of the apt manager.

The cops got it out of him: The manager would tell her punk nephew and his friends who worked days and when the left and when the got home. She ALSO went into the apts using her passkey and handpicked what she wanted stolen.

Ironically, she didn't go to jail b/c they couldn't PROVE that she did these things. She did get fired though.

Food for thought.

I already thought of that.

However, him and his wife were gone since saturday and didn't get home till today.

That does leave the Assistant Super though.

EDIT: I filed a complaint with the property owners too.

Time to re-wire. Its amazing what all can happen when you hook the 120 AC line over to the cable line... 😉

PS: I'm back! 🙂
