RANT: My apartment is freaking hot!

My apartment complex has yet to turn on the air conditioning. So the heat is still coming out. This week it has been unbearably hot inside my apartment! We're talking temperatures over 90 degrees inside!
I've tried talking to the management but they keep giving me the runaround saying they can't make the decision to switch over to AC. I finally called the parent company (Charles E Smith) and I was told it's a Virginia law that apartments have to provide heat until May 1st. I asked her what am I supposed to do with 90-95 degree temperatures inside my apartment and she told me that I'm SOL.
BTW I'm guessing 90-95 because our thermostats max out at 90 degrees and the red line is at the very top. Also it's not a cheap apartment. I'm paying almost $1200 /month in rent!
I've tried googling for this law but I can't seem to find anything about it. Does anyone else know about this?
Is there anything I can do regarding this? I fear my fish are doomed because the water temp is slowly rising as well. I've kept it ~78 degrees and this morning it was at 84. I'll probably take out a few buckets and put in some cold water in its place.

TIA

Open a window, put in one of those little fans to circulate air. Or take cardboard and duct tape and cover the air vents.

What type of apartment are you in??? I have never heard of that. I live in VA in an apartment and I am running my AC right now.

The units are turned off. The way we're setup, we have two thermostats in our place. One in the bedroom, one in the living room. They don't control whether it's hot or cold, they just control whether it's on or not. Like I have the living room one set to 72. The apartment complex controls whether it's hot air or cold air that comes out. We bought a huge fan for our bedroom which we place near the window but it's still unbearably hot.

Man what crap that you rely on them turning it on or off. Any apartment I've always had with AC had its own unit, and I was in total control of it at all times.

must be somewhat of a space issue then they may have one big AC, and you control on or off then. cause here each apt. has their own AC outside and they cover it up with brush. Maybe you big city folk don't have the space for individual AC's :)

I can't believe this situation is legal. Those are the kinds of temps that kill old people whenever a heat wave strikes.

It's so hot that you think your fish are going to die? Time to get something done in a higher level of management.

Why not go out and get one of those window AC's... I would rent it :) (Buy it from Walmart, return it after May 1)

So why can't you turn your heat off again?

#1. Take off the vent grill.
#2. Cut a piece of Cardboard to fit.
#3 Insert cardboard into space.
#4 replace grill
#5 Open windows.
#6 turn on fan.
#7 enjoy your mastery over the elements.

Write a letter and state that you will not be paying the full amount of rent for the month of April due to the circumstances! Then simply come up with a $ figure that is reasonable and subtract that from your $1200/month. Although, if you are paying that much why can't you control your own thermostat?

I have the same thing here. Though we arent having a heatwave here. By law they arent allowed to turn off heating until mid may. And inorder for them to turn it on early it has to be something like 10 days of extreme heat before they consider switching over. Mostly because they dont want to shut down the whole system which takes 3-4 days to shut down/start up, just to have to turn it back on again when a cold front comes through during spring. Which is likely to happen. Just be glad its almost May :)

No no I meant the heat is turned off. But it's still freaking hot. I'm going to try to get a AC unit from walmart tonight. Only problem is that I also bought a oil heater for last fall (same reason, BS stupid crap about not turning on the heat while it's freezing) and when I turn up the heat all the way on this unit, my power goes out ( have to reset the breaker).

That's freaking absurd. You're a prisoner of their will when it comes to the climate of your own expensive apartment. Thank God I never had to endure that. I wasn't aware apartments could legally get away with this. You learn something new everyday...

if it was some dump of an apt I don't think I would be complaining too much (But I would), But when you are paying 1200 a month then you need to call the management and tell them that you won't be paying rent unless they can offer a solution. Tell them that if they can't help you, then they can purchase some box fans to place in your windows and pay the difference in your engery bill that the fans will bring.

Regardless of what the law states, there is no reason they shouldn't have a way for individuals to turn the heat off in their own rooms for that high of a rent.

Im thinking he has the same set up we have at our place. You can turn off the heat, you just cant change the temperature. You set your thermostat at what degree you want it to click on and it will. But besides that.. the only thing to do is turn it off or on. You cant regulate whats being blown in, until they switch over the system.
