afraid, how about they know what they like. I've tried Japanese food here and hated it, even if it's 100% better over there, hate doesn't become love. I would eat Pizza Hut if I was in Japan but that's just me.

You'd find that Italian places in Tokyo do excellent pizza, way better than anything I've had at Pizza Hut. Best Indian food I've ever had was in Tokyo (near Nihonbashi Stn).

Where are you OP? I'm going to assume Tokyo - what neighbourhood?

nah, i am in nagoya its east of kyoto. I was in maizuru for the week, which was a dead town pretty much. it's about 2 hours north of kyoto. got into nagoya last night and it's been pretty cool so far. I dont think im gonna have enough energy to go search for nightlife tonight; I will be going straight to narita airport tomorrow to fly back to philly.

the nagoya area is known for their miso paste-based foods. I had some udon noodles with a miso paste broth and it was amazing. i wish i could go back to that place and have some other stuff, but i think the call of sushi beckons :)

You've tried every single variety of Japanese food? Wow, you're a fortunate man indeed.

It's even incredible that you hated every single style and item you tried, you must be cursed by the gods with a particularly picky palate :Q

lame, for food, i stay with the "when in rome" philosophy. I already know that i like jap food, but im sure if i went to africa i'd try some of their food too regardless if i'll spew it out later. whats the point of traveling anywhere if you are gonna stay within your comfort limit and eat mcdonalts?

looking for Kaiten zushi or just a sit-down a la carte? I would've thought Maizuru would have had decent sushi being a small port town and all. What kind of work brings you to a city like Maizuru for a week though?

I like Miso ramen myself... Sapporo's was the best I've ever had.

Japanese food is one of my favorite type of food. i do usually like to try new stuff, however I'll admit that I'm not that adventurous.

Yup, I love trying new food. I also made a point of it when I did my mini Asia trip the end of last year. :)

Well I have to tell you that if I were in the Phillipines I think I'd have to pass on the Balut.

BTW, you were sent to Japan on one days notice? Wow I hope you get a nice bonus for it well besides the bonus of getting to go to Japan)

i get a bunch of overtime, all expenses on my trip included (besides alcohol of course) and a nice per diem rate

if i had more notice i woulda planned a trip to hawaii on my way back, or to vietnam or something... instead i have to be back in work first thing at 10AM on monday for an important meeting i scheduled before my japan trip :(

sushi in maizuru was mediokes... imagine going into a conveyor belt place at 7PM and seeing no one there, with a bunch of sushi rolling there for god knows how long... i motioned the chef to bring out some fresh pieces and itw as pretty decent. basic sashimi/nigiri pieces with some fish i've never had before. Ever have raw shrimp? it's actually pretty good, and tastes completely different from cooked ones.

maizuru is a base for the JMSDF and i had to go there to work on one of their ships. karaoke with the sailors is fun!

I don't know how many times I've eaten at restaurants and either pointed at the menu because no one spoke English or told the waiter to give us your specialty because that was all he could understand.

That's what makes traveling fun.

Hell, even when we went to Vegas the wife said one night she wanted something more ethnic than the fare in the restaurants on the strip. We drove to the worst part of town and found a Mexican restaurant, almost no English was spoken there, but we had a great meal.

Wow, you're a lamer. I'm guessing you've never really traveled. Never had tempura? You know it's not all sushi.

OP - if I were you, I'd tell them your co-workers that you're going to go eat by yourself some where local. Screw them.

i ate mcdonald's when i was over there once. mainly, to see how different it was in another country. my favorite place has to have been the local in the wall dive that served soba noodles. I have yet to find a place here that matches it.

I was too afraid of eating sushi though. I was a bit worried about getting sick, as I was there on my own pretty much and didn't know a lick of japanese, heh.

i had their mcdonalds. it was the first time i've eaten mcdonalds in like 6 years, but their chicken sandwich was decent, once i scraped off all the mayo. since i was the new guy, they made me run to mcdonalds and order 8 sandwiches, 10 minutes before the train arrived to leave the town, lol

i've survived because they normally have pictures of their foods on their menus, and they have these plastic samples of their food displaying outside usually, and i just point lol. its a pain in the ass since i am american born vietnamese, and alot of people just start talking to me in japanese and i just have a confused look on my face. i only know a few phrases and pretty much every sushi thing in japanese, lol

If I went to Japan it would be hard for me to eat much, because I can't stand seafood. Not like icky-I'm-seven can't stand, like it actually makes me gag and I feel nausea swelling in my stomach. I just can't eat it.

they have alot of non-seafood stuff too. they use katsu (pork) in lots of their stuff and vegetables. im not gonna lie, theres alot of seafood but you can definitely get away with not eating it
