Oh, and why don't you just go eat where you want to and let them eat where they want to? What's the freakin problem?

QFT. There's no better way, in my opinion, to experience culture than through food.

I don't understand why you care OP.

Why not just let them eat whatever they want without getting all worked up?

I love to try new and different foods unless they are based on something I know I don't like. I would assume Japanese food is based on fish and I don't like fish. I will eat clams, snails, oysters, squid, or pretty much any type of seafood other than fish. I have never liked fish so that would limit what Japanese food I would be likely to eat. The only fish that I like is salmon when it is in salmon cakes or the fish and chips batter fried type fish and that only because the batter and malt vinegar mean I'm not really tasting fish.

The problem is that there is a ton of Japanese food that is not fish based. Try some Kobe beef?

You should go out on your own.. done it many times myself on trips with my coworkers for the same reason (although not somewhere as cool as Japan)

I hate oriental foods. I wouldn't try it either, give me a cheeseburger and I'll be happy as can be.

I hate people like the OP who can't do things on their own. So what if they didn't want to eat different food, what was stopping you? Then you they need to grow up when you're the person whining about it. I'm a picky eater, and I tell them exactly that whenever they start their whining. You don't have my tastebuds, so there's no reason you should be telling me what to eat. No, I have not tried every type of food or anything, but I have eaten enough of various types to know that at best I might be able to stomach some of the food and will end up in a bad mood for eating something I did not like. Nine point nine nine times out of ten I will not like the food that people feel the need to force on me, if I wanted that, I would have ordered it. I don't sit there and whine about it, I just plain don't eat (politely say I'm not hungry, or maybe I'll get an appetizer or something), or will eat somewhere else. I don't have a problem doing that if everyone wants to eat somewhere and I don't. I'm "adventurous" enough in other things to make up for my lack of it when it comes to food.

I don't have a problem with people who like trying new foods and things like that (in fact I think its great), its just when they start trying to force their view on me and start whining about it that I have a problem. Once I know someone is one of those people, I do not eat with them.

Whenever I'm in a foreign country I want to eat their food. When I went to the Dominican Republic over February break, I was disappointed that we were eating sandwiches for lunch and it wasn't safe to buy food from vendors. We did have some cool stuff for dinner, though.

But really, eating ONLY the food you're used to in a foreign country is stupid. What's the point of being there if you're not going to try new stuff?

Yeah, I know they have those pictures, I just stayed away from the raw fish to minimize any issues I might have. I've been sick from it before and didn't need it while out there, heh. Mainly because my friend/guide sorta flaked on me and couldn't show me around as much.

you HATE people for not living to your set of standards? How sad. You must be a very small person.

Personally, trying local foods is a big part of the travel experience for me, but I know it's outside the comfort zone for many people. I don't hate them for it though...I feel sorry for them because they're missing out on some wonderful foods and cultural experiences.

I am however careful what I eat when in foreign countries...some of them eat some pretty fucked up stuff that I just don't want any part of...
