RANT: Florida law enforcement are ticket happy.

In what was an Obvious speed trap, my wife received her second speeding ticket in as many months since we moved to Florida. This time though, it was rather absurd.

It was an obvious speed trap, motorcycle cops were pulling folks over 4 cars at a time. Thing is, we were definitely within the margin of error, or so we thought. The officer stated we were doing 13 miles over the posted limit of 55, which would put us doing 68mph. Apparently we were clocked with a laser.

Now, this is kindof odd, because this was on I-4 in Orlando, just about downtown Orlando, at 8:15am (primetime rushhour), at the point were traffic was just about heavy enough to drop folks under the limit. For those of you that know the area, I-4 east about 1/4mile before the John Young exit. Basically - it isn't POSSIBLE to speed at this point. At best, we were doing about 60.

DAMN BASTAGES!

So fight it in court and state that it was during such heavy traffic you were actually angry because you wanted to speed but you codln't because of all the other cars and it's physically impossible for you to have been goign 13 over or you would have smashed into the car in front of you.

The fact that you are basing your estimation of speed off traffic conditions and other things shows you have no idea exactly how fast you were going when clocked because you were not actively monitoring your speed.

Your case is sunk already.

Next time just inform the cop that you already had your daily allotment of pork when you had your bacon this morning. Then tell him to run along and find something more constructive to do. May'be throw in a donut joke too.

There is no possible way we could have been doing 68mph in that area. If so, we would have been firmly planted in the trunk of another car.

The point is, from your OP, it is obvious you have no idea how fast you were going. For all you know traffic could have sped up for a while. An 8 mph jump in the flow of traffic is not huge.

If you want to beat this, get a pro. Because your story above will get the same response from the judge that I just gave you.

Yes, your honor.

I should also point out that where you think they lasered you could have been miles down the road so as not to blow the locaiton of the guy doing the readings.

Good point.

You've never driven in that particular location then. It is possible you were lasered a ways back though long before you got to that area (but unlikely).

It does suck...

One time, my g/f's dad got a ticket for not stopping at a railroad track and opening his door. As funny and unbelievable it sounds, (I did not believe it first), it happened. My g/f's dad did not even bother contesting it cause he doesn't understand english very well and he never found out why until my g/f found a copy of the ticket and told him what it was for.

Those crazy floridians.....

WTF is a speed trap? Did they cover the speed limit signs with leaves and dig a pit with pungee sticks in it? How were you "trapped?"

I just don't understand what the big deal with mass enforcement of the posted law is. I do see problems with quotas, increasing partols to increase revenue, stopping everyone to search for drunks, etc. But how are 8 cops checking for speeders in the same place any different than 1?

This isn't entrapment, so why call it a trap?

Also, if you weren't looking at the speedodometer how are you estimating your speed? Cops can barely get away with 'eyeing' someone's speed, how well do you think you will fair in court, w/o the experience of a cop, in determing speed?

The fvck? You're supposed to stop and open your door at a railroad crossing? Is he a bus driver?

a speed trap can vary, the favorite around northern jersey is when cops park at the bottom of a hill. talk about having the money roll in 🙂

nah, I think the cops needed to meet their quota and since my g/f's dad knew little english at the time, they got away with it.

If it was an "obvious speed trap", shouldn't your wife have slowed down a little? I'm getting tired of people who refuse to admit guilt. If you were even 1 mph over the limit, you are still breaking the law. Take the ticket like a man.

Yes, I just got a ticket this month for rolling through a stop sign. I came pretty damn close to stopping, but it wasn't complete so I can't really argue. I even had my best friend (who happens to be a cop) in the car with me at the time. He pleaded on my behalf with the ticketing officer to let me go, but to no avail. I took the ticket in stride - I gambled by not stopping completely, I lost - but my friend was extremely pissed 'cause the other officer didn't give professional courtesy.

This morning the whole westbound-inbound stretch from Disney on in wasn't doing much more than 60 the whole way. I'll admit 5mph over, but there's no way in hell it was 13mph over.
