Rant: Electrician surfing porn sites while left alone in house

A couple of weeks ago, my girlfriend's parents had two electricians working at their house. Her mom had to leave the house for a couple of hours, and while she was gone one of the electricians left to get lunch for the two of them. During this time, the other one decided to get on their computer and surf porn sites. As if it wasn't bad enough that the guy is jerking off in someone else's house, he left their computer infested with spyware (that's how they found out about it, they kept getting porn popups). So I ran Adaware for them, found about 500 objects. The computer was still acting funny, so I ran AVG and found 24 viruses. I thought everything was working fine after that, but now she calls and says she's still having problems with it (IE not working right). As a last resort I'll probably install ZoneAlarm, but her mom really doesn't know enough about computers to know what programs to allow access to the Internet and which programs to deny access.

It really pisses me off that this guy would do this stuff on someone else's computer. Is there anything they can do about it, legally? They called the company the guy works for, and they don't seem to care to do anything about it.

BTW, this is why you password protect every computer.

Can you do that with Win98? I remember setting up a password for a Win98 system and when I didn't enter a password, I was still able to use the computer!

Unless you taped him, you have no proof.

Well, we have cookies that show someone was surfing porn sites for 10 minutes when he was the only person in the house.

BTW, this is why you password protect every computer.

These aren't the most computer-savvy people in the world. I'll make sure it's password-protected in the future, I just hope she doesn't keep the password on a Post-It note on the monitor. 😛

You can make a screensaver password and just leave the computer on. To protect against someone shutting down to bypass the screensaver password, also use a BIOS password.

I know these wont protect against a leet hacker, but they will keep the stray electrician off your box.

Which can be circumvented if someone really wants to get access to your computer. But then again, you can get around Windows XP's password protection by just installing another OS.

Edit: I know no electrician is giong to install another OS just to get onto your computer to look at porn sites, I'm just making you aware of the difficulty of securing your computer.

And the stray porn watching eletrician isn't going to do that.

Like I said before, this isn't to keep the KGB or the CIA off your box, just the hired help.

🙂

Anywho, like I said... all your boxes should have at least minimum password protection. Mine have for years.

yeah... i saw your edit... and i understand, nothing is truly foolproof. but i posted that just to state that i dont actually anticipate an electrician taking the time to try and circumvent it.
