RANT about quoting on the Forum

This thread should be good for Mod quotes by the time its locked.......I personally liked the Hat Trick one, although I didn't find it "sig worthy"

Anyways, the nested quoting has never bothered my.

I remember getting a two week ban for doing this last year.... I learned my lesson.

Oh and Mod, your going easy on them!

I'm only bothered by nested quotes when it's more than 5 layers deep.

But all the bannage in this thread makes me laff

What does "to slow" mean?

Methinks the mod is too giddy right now.

Killy posted the nested quote and then tried to edit it out.

I had already trapped the nesting for posterity.

He gambled and lost.

The lack of understanding amazes me.

I hope that you are thanking me for the 1 WK vacation that you just earned.

Meh... seems kind of lame to be banning for doing the nested quotes in this thread. That was obviously going to happen due to the OP. Anytime anyone posts a thread saying "stop doing X", people always respond with X. Yet I've never seen anyone banned for it before. Just lock thread if you don't want to nested quotes.

Agreed, and if you're going to ban people for reacting as expected, poster should get a ban equal to all the bans in the thread combined.

i get your points, but on the one hand, there are plenty of us that would like to have a serious discussion on the topic, and it wouldn't be fair to us and the OP if the thread got locked just because people want to screw around.

Plus, what you're saying is kind of like (not exactly) a mom telling her 18 year old son not to do drugs. If the kid does drugs anyway and gets caught, should the mom be punished for it?

Funny how we allow multiple nested quotes in other threads and they are fine with it. But I suppose in most situations they are actually useful in those threads 🙂.

lol @ the banage 😛

How?

The Mods did not start the thread and also have generated fair warning.

A few months ago, there was also another set of bannings due to Quoting.

If people have a hard time comprehending what the word NO means, then they need to go back to school.

what would stink is if someone didn't read this thread especially the original post and just nested quotes like is done normally in every other thread.

Doesn't some forum software automatically limit nested quotes to the message quoted? I always edit out the extraneous nested quotes, but I don't begrudge people who don't unless it gets ridiculous.

Yes, some forum software does just that.

The problem is that despite the warnings, people still think they can outsmart the mods by cloaking their neffing in the hopes of getting a sig quote.

*sigh* oh, to have a mod quote 🙁 😀

The only issue I see, although I am only ASSUMING based on timestamps is that the MOD added the warning at 2:24pm and started handing out bans at 2:25pm. Many of the "violations" were posted before the warning ever was posted.

For example, the 1st person banned posted his message at 1:53pm but got banned at 2:25. Should he have known better? Perhaps, but I have encountered numerous threads this evening with nested quotes and no bannage resulted.

DISCLAIMER:
But I'm not complaining, mods. You guys do a bang-up job and fail to get the thanks you deserve; Thanks, Mods! You guys are alright by me! <sheepish grin>

One can not catch all the idiots that want attention.

Those that were banned knew what they were doing was unneeded and they got caught.

I've been away from ATOT for quite a few months. One thing I've noticed A LOT of is quoting without "cleaning" up before making the post. Is it the new "quick reply" tool that is making people lazy? I've never seen such ridiculous quoting in my whole Intarweb Forum-lurker career:

And that's not the worst of it! This was just a quickie example I parsed. So just a reminder to all -- can we clean up the quotes before we make our post official? No need to quote 10 or 15 layers deep.

Okay, I'm done now.

I admit they are obnoxious at times... especially when theres like a string of 20...
but occasionally it is necessary for 4-5 nested quotes... provided none of them have "written a book"

There are two key words that you apparently have overlooked.

One is bolded above in your post.
The other is what I highlighted (just for you) in your quote of the OP.

I don't know what it's called with forum software but on a bunch of the other boards I frequent, hitting the quote button only gives you the text of the person you're quoting. Yes, sometimes it's easy to get lost but I really feel that those few cases do not outweigh the lack of clutter on said boards. Is there any possibility of something like that happening here?

Word for word reading really never has been my strongpoint.
Though, ill shut up now, so i dont risk banning myself.

Hello, mods. 🙂

Would any of y'all mods be my best friend? I need a good friend. Someone I can look up to. So, please be my friend.
